self defense? I am working female and want to learn self defense / Martial arts/ karate - anything. Any body know where are the classes in South Delhi (only for ladies/women or office going ladies and having evening timing). Please give reply.
self-defense? I've read a news article saying that a man shot his wife to deaf with a 22 rifle and he clamed that it was all in a act of self defense because his wife was chasing him around the house with a knife. But that man shot his wife over 8 times with the rifle witch only takes six rounds of bullets to reload. Did this man have the right to say that this was all in the act of self-defense?
Self Defense? I am a self defense instructor for the agency that I work for. I have been asked to teach self defense to a local sorority. Should I teach them some of lethal blows I instruct with my fellow deputies, or keep it pretty basic. They have had a stalker in the area lately. I have already decided to include pressure points, the brachial plexus spots and the psychology of self defense. I am just curious. This is one of my first classes that is not full of certified peace officers and military personel. In referense to "Dave" - We need self defense as law enforcement officers, becasue sometimes all we can rely on is hand to hand defense. There are times that we are critisized for using our weapon. If someone attacks us or goes for our weapon, we have the right to use any force necessary to get full control back. 87% of all officers shot in the line of duty are killed by their own weapon. Self defense as a deputy is as essential as our handcuffs.
Self defense? How many times do you have to get hit before you can call it self defense? Like in school if someone hits you and you fight back you both get suspended but i think if you get hit a certain number of times you don't get in trouble because its self defense. Does anyone know how many times you have to get hit to call it self defense? I've heard 3 and 7 but im not sure Oh also I live in Maryland
Self-Defense? What defense can be used when one assaults someone to protect a loved one? I have heard it called self-defense but I'm not sure that's right. In this particular case the attacker says he blacked out and cannot remember what happened. When the police arrived he, his pregnant lover, and the victim were the only ones in the house. His lover was unconscious after an alleged attack by the victim, the attacker entered the house, claims he saw the victim standing over his lover and cannot remember anything until the police arrived. Could you use a self-defense plea, or possibly a mental disease or defect plea? What defense would be more substantial and can you quote a case were this plea was used and successful? Also, the lover cannot remember anything beyond arriving at the house. She does not recall being attacked, although there are injuries. The police found that the victim in this case was the father of the baby and think that is possibly motive for the attacker. The attacker claims he had no knowledge on this fact until after he was arrested.
What style of self-defense would be best for someone with no experience? I'm not athletic or very flexible, but I'm hoping to learn some self defense. Is there one that will be able to give me some skill in the art, but will not be too demanding in the beginning? I've heard that most forms of self-defense require a minimum level of fitness in the beginning. Yes, I could carry a weapon, but that's not always possible in case of a attack. For example, a lot of places don't allow pepper spray.
What is a good self defense style for a disabled person? I have a minor disability that affects my balance somewhat and my ability to stand for long periods. I'd like to learn self defense. Would boxing be adequate? I don't really care for participating in tournaments, I just want the self defense bit of it. I already carry concealed. I travel by air extensively, It would hinder my travels to depend solely on a firearm ;p. I do love the sense of humor, though!
How do you store and keep your self defense weapon ready?? Do you keep the mag inserted? Keep the mag out? How many loaded mags? Keep a round in the chamber? Keep the gun in a lock box? In your night stand drawer? A couple gun's in different parts of your house? Mags in different parts of your house? Under lock and key in some way? Have a self defense kit (ie flashlight, mase, taser, alarm whistle, etc) What ammo do you use for self defense?
Best way to start learning self defense and martial arts? I am a female college student. I really want to learn self defense and martial arts well. I took one Aikido class in college, but I didn't get enough training. I guess it was because the class was too big. I don't make very much money. But becoming good at martial arts is a dream for me. What are some places, classes etc that are the cheapest yet best quality? I don't really know where to start to get training.
Do you make a distinction between hitting back in self defense and hitting back in retaliation? I've read many responses to questions about men hitting women (who had hit the men first). But certainly, hitting in retaliation ("don't dish it out if you can't take it") must be fundamentally different than hitting in self defense ("my life has been genuinely threatened"). I imagine that there must be scenarios of hitting back that is in retaliation, but not self defense. Likewise, I imagine that there must be scenarios of hitting back that is in self defense, but not retaliation. What do you think? Do you differentiate between self defense and retaliation in physical altercations?
What is the best means of self-defense for a young woman? I am a 20 year old college student and I am about to be moving from a middle class suburb to a lower income part of the city. I will be walking and taking public transportation. Beside taking a self-defense class, should I keep anything with me to protect myself? Any other safety tips or advice is welcome as well :) Thanks!
How much are self defense courses and what type of non-leathal weapons are there? (In the U.S) I'm young and I've been thinking about having my Mother and Sister take a self-defense course and then have them carry a non-lethal weapon (for self defense) in case anything were to happen. What are some self defense weapons other then tasers and stun guns? and how much would a self defense course cost? Thanks.
What are good self defense techniques for a larger person? You always hear about self defense techniques a small person uses against a larger aggressor (Better endurance, leverage, mobility), but as a tall, sturdy guy myself I can't help but wonder what I should do if I'm attacked on the streets by a smaller opponent (other than running away of course). In the area where I live there is little chance of me actually getting attacked in a secluded area, so I’m asking this question more out of curiously. No i'm not obese, just large muscle mass and bone structure.
What is the best martial art for self defense for women and kids? My young children and I would like to learn a martial art/ self defense. What is the best martial art for this? If there are no classes in my area, does anyone know any step-by-step instructions on line somewhere? We just need to learn how to get out of a bad situation fast if we have to. Thanks. Thank you everyone for your responses!
What is the best martial art for self defense for short people? So I was wondering what a good martial art for self defense is for someone who is like 5'5". Like is there a martial art that can teach me how to defend myself against someone who's 6'8" 300 pounds. I know if someone got a hold of me that's that size they would break me in two.
How can I overcome the fear of learning combatives for self defense? I am about to start taking a combatives/self defense program where I live. I am honestly a little intimidated because I have NO fighting skills. The fact is that I need to learn to protect myself. That is why I am taking this self defense program. Does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to face and conquer this fear? Just looking for some solid advice from anyone who cares to help.
What is a good martial art for self defense and keeping in shape? I want to learn a martial art for self defense and to improve my health, though there seems to be so many different styles that I don't know where to start. Also, I live in Salt Lake City, Utah, so if anyone can recommend a training facility it would be much appreciated.
What do you think is the best self defense weapon? I am planning to make a gift and was thinking about buying any of self-defense weapons. I know that they are all designed to give you time to escape, but anyway, what is the best? Pepper spray doesn't look as a serious option, maybe a stun gun?
What would happen in court if you kill an intruder with a machete in self defense? There are always situations where a person breaks into a house then gets shot by the house owner in self defense, but what if a person instead had a machete or sword and hacked the person to pieces in self defense? Guns put nice little holes into the body, but a large blade would take off limbs or disembowel a person, how would people in court react when you say you acted in self defense?
What self defense classes should I take? I am a cadet at a police department and I am looking into taking some self defense classes. I have narrowed it down to Aikijutsu and Aikido. I know both are similar but which one is more effective to officers? Thanks guys!
How can i improve my self defense skills? I really wanna do boxing but my parents say it'll kill my brain cells. If thats true, if there any other type of self defense that would be fun, id be proud of, and would work?
What things in my purse could be used as self defense? If I were to be attacked in a parking lot or something and had my purse, what sort of everyday things could be used as a means of self-defense? I already carry pepper spray with me. What else should I have handy to protect myself? Please, serious answers only. Thank you in advance!
What is the better way to teach self defense techniques? Serious martial arts students and instructors only please. In a system that has about 100 self defense techniques to black belt, Is it better to teach many different techniques off similar grabs (i.e. arm bar, wrist lock, and shoulder lock off of a wrist grab) or teach one defense against each type of grab (i.e. wrist grab, shoulder grab, choke)? I want my students to get a well rounded system. I have done both types but I am trying to figure out what works best for the majority.
What is a good concealed carry self defense pistol? I'm looking for a self defense pistol for concealed carry. Something around $500, I like the look of boxy pistols such as the glock. I would prefer no manual safety but enough safety where i won't shoot myself by accident. I wear an XL glove size so can't be too small of a pistol.
What is the best handgun for self defense? First off, if you don't really have any real knowledge of guns or experience beyond what you personally use please don't answer. I'm looking for something for self defense in a home invasion scenario in which it may be close quarters and I may not be able to get many rounds off. So, I want something that counts when it hits. In your experience what would be the best handgun & best brand? Any bullet recommendations or does it really not matter that much?
What sort of self defense class should i take? I live right outside Philadelphia and go into town with friends a lot. We all agreed we would all feel safer if we took some sort of self defense class, and maybe then my mom will get off my case about being a city goer and abandon the idea that all men are out to get me. Anyway, I'm looking for more than just a one time workshop, but an ongoing class that will help me defend myself. What should I do-kickboxing, judo, tae kwon do? Thanks!
What items can you legally have for self defense in NYC? I'm under 18 but I REALLY want something for self defense. I've read the laws and stuff and I understand when and how I'm supposed to use things like pepper spray, but I heard you have to be 18 own pepper spray and you can't even own a stun gun in NYC. I was planning to buy what I wanted on eBay but I'm still now sure what I'm able to buy. The only things I could think of was a stun gun and pepper spray.
What is the most defensive form of self defense? I'd like to learn a form of self defense, but I want to know which one is the most defensive of the bunch. I want to focus on blocks, dodges, and possibly counters. There is no reason I want a really defensive form other then I think it would best suit me. Any help is much appreciated.
Should Japanese start building their self defense force? I don't know how strong the Japanese mililtary is but should they not start building their self defense force more rather than just depend on us going in and rescuing them? I heard they only spend about 1% of GDP in defense. Is it because of the treaty they signed in WW2 or they just figure we would come to their rescue and not spend the money? Or are their military really stronger than most people think?
What is the best fighting style for self defense? I'm 5'10" and around 160lbs. So I'm not small, but not large. I want to study a good self defense form of martial arts that can be applied in the real world (street fights). I've heard Kenpo karate is excellent for this. What do you guys say. If it's important I'm a Taosit.
What is the best self defense/conditioning exercise? I would like to begin a conditioning program (strength and cardio), but would also like to add a self defense aspect to it. I would like it to be low physical impact (ie. not kick boxing) I want to learn how to defend myself as well. Any ideas?
what is a good self defense class for the featherweight person? If you are below 100 pounds, and someone could throw you across a room, is there any "real" self defense class that is more than just a fancy kick or unique move? By that I mean something that would actually work in the event of an actual attack. Suggestions?
What happens to a gun legally used in self-defense? I am curious based on some responses I read on a message board. Some people stated they would use the cheapest, most effective gun because it would be confiscated by law enforcement if used for self defense. I am not interested in whether they are correct or not, but I do wonder about their statement. What happens to a gun that is legally used in self-defense? Is it confiscated (forever, temporarily, at all?). Assume you have a concealed carry permit and had to shoot someone or fire a warning shot in self defense. Would your gun be taken? What if you used a gun legally in home defense? I know the law may vary by state and locality, but I am interested in hearing from law enforcement officers.
What does the bible say about killing in self-defense? I want to be a cop when I grow up and if someone shots at me what does God think about killing in self-defense. Because I know he says people shouldn't murder but what does the bible say about killing in self-defense?
What is the line between self defense and assault? What does it take to classify it as self defense? Can I hit him if he swings first or does he have to make contact? If he tries to cheap shot me, can I attack him? If he lays a hand on someone else, can I defend them? If I'm attacked in the persons house, does it matter? When do I have to let up? You don't have to answer every question...I just want to know if the situation ever comes around so I dont get into any legal trouble.
How to submit a Bill making it mandatory for a high school senior to take a self-defense class? I know the process of submitting a bill; however, I do not know how to get my idea heard! I believe that every female should take a self-defense class before she graduates, and that it should be a mandatory curriculum. I think this should be universal........no person should ever be a victim, they should know basic self-defense skills to prevent and get them out of a situation! How can I go about getting these types of classes mandatory? I truly think this type of class could make a difference!
How realistically effective is a Kubotan in an actual self defense situation? I was looking up self defense items and the Kubotan key chain looked appealing because it looked easy to carry around and wasn't obviously a weapon. But in an actual situation if you were being attacked or mugged (say by multiple people even), how effective and easy would it really be to use in the hands of an untrained person without fighting skills? Also, are there any other types of easily carried that preferably don't look like weapons? *easily carried weapons
In terms of learning self defense, is Muay Thai and Kickboxing the same thing? I want to learn Kickboxing for self defense and not as a sport, but I've read places that Muay Thai (which people recommend as the best self defense) is different from Kickboxing. In terms of self defense, is this true? The thing is, I checked the site where I'd probably sign up for Kickboxing and it said on the site that it incorporates effective hand, knee, elbow and foot techniques... so what does that mean?
What are some possible weapons i could buy for self defense? Mace....I'm really iffy about guns. Idk Where would i go to get mace. Do they teach you how to use it? I really dont know alot about self defense. But lately i have been really thinking i should get something incase an altercation were to occur.
How long would it take to get comfortable at self defense? I know this is is a difficult thing to answer. There is a self defense class that i would like to take. Its based on Hapkido i believe but its for street self defense. Now, im a bit of a small guy and im just wondering, with average determination how long can i expect to train before i would feel comfortable defending myself in the "average" situation. Again i know there are A LOT of variables here, but can anyone give me any kind of idea what to expect? I really only have 4 or 5 months to train...
What is the most effective Martial Art to learn for self defense? I am looking for learning an effective Martial Art that is very versatile. I do not plan on fighting competitively so I want to learn primarily for self defense purposes. I want it to be versatile, so that if I fight a wrestler I can work decent on the ground. Or if I fight a striker, I can also handle my own. I do plan on eventually learning multiple Martial Arts. But for now I am looking for a good one to start.
What type of self defense class is best? I'd like to learn some sort of self defense, to get me into shape and it's better to be safe than sorry. Any particular one really good and somewhat fun to learn? What would it be called? (karate ect...) Thanks!
What is the best martial art for a woman to learn for self defense? I have the time, money, and desire to learn. I'm 5'2", 34 years old, 150 lbs. (but I have started a diet and am working out now, so the weight will go down). I have no medical problems that I know of at this time. I don't want to only take a simple self defense class, I want to study a martial art. I know that it maytake years to get really good at a martial art, but I plan on being around for awhile, so I don't mind. :-) Thanks. LOL! Love your answer, Liz. I have a jumbo cannister, but I really do want to learn a martial art as well. :-)
What is the most practical and applicable martial art for modern day self-defense? I don't care about it being "fancy", I don't care about meditation, or character development, I just want to be better able to defend myself. Right now I was thinking of looking into Defendo(Bill Underwood's martial art that spun off of Combato, not the newer, unrelated one) or Emerson Combat Systems. If anyone more familiar with martial arts has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for something with emphasis on unarmed self-defense with the goal of knocking an aggressor(or aggressors) unconscious, gun and knife disarms, and improvised weapons.
How many people here have used their gun in self defense? I am trying to guage how many people have actually used their gun in an assault or home invasion situation in self defense. It seems that gun proponents often use this as a reason for owning a gun. Is it as common as they make it sound? This is not intended to be an argument for or against gun ownership. It is merely an empirical analysis on gun ownership in YahooAnswers.
What is the best kind of self-defense/karate to learn that simply teaches you how to kick someones @$$? I want to learn how to fight well and take a aggressive hands on self-defense class.. I don't want something that teaches you, and your body, to be one or, hands out different colored belts while you jump around high kicking in white outfits..I simply want to learn how to kick someones butt with my hands or objects, as if i were really in the street with my clothes on (not barefoot in a karate outfit) and someone happened to approach me.. What would i take and if possible is there any places that offer this around Los Angeles, CA?
What if you killed a person in self defense? I am a Christian, and even though the Bible says not to kill, it also says that your body is the temple of the Lord, and you shouldn't let harm come unto it. If someone tried to hurt or kill you, they would be harming the temple of the Lord, so would it be a sin to kill someone out of self defense?
What is the best self defense class ( or art ) for me ? Hello ! Im looking to start taking a self defense class but I need help finding the right one.Let me tell you what im looking for , Im looking to increase my metal discipline Im looking for a "art" with many disarms (from weapons) and counters and body part locks. Im looking for something to increase my flexibility Something that will help me defend myself better in a fight. Advice is appreciated Thanks!
What are the appropriate or legal situations were a gun can be used for self defense? Say some person broke into my house at night . . . if I have a handgun, am I allowed to shoot them for self defense? What if I see some one trying to steal my car in a parking lot or at home? How do police tell the difference between some one killed on purpose by a gun, from self defense? For example person A is just walking along the street, then person B comes along and shoots person A and they die. Person B wanted to kill person A, but when police arrive person B could say "Oh well they were attacking me, I was defending myself". What happens then? I'm thinking of getting a gun for self defense but I want to know when I would need to use it and when not too. I know much of it is common sense but I want to know for sure.
What are some easy-to-make small, unnoticeable self defense items? Sometimes, after school, I walk across the road to where my mom works. I have a fairly small physical body, and, despite being present at a few classes of Taekwondo, am not very threatening at all. My school is in the more ritzy part of the big city, and I would like a how-to on how to make a small self-defense weapon that can fit in my purse/backpack/pocket.
Best gun for self defense that is not a handgun? If handguns were to be unlawful (like they used to be in DC), what kind of gun could possibly be used for self defense? In other words, what's the smallest gun that is not a "handgun" but which still might be used in a "defense mode"?
What is the best self defense technique to use if attacked? Hi, I had a close encounter the other night with a guy that was following me! I was lucky to get away. If confronted by a guy like this again what is the best form of self defense i can use to get away? has this happened to anyone before?
Girls would you kick a boy in the balls if you are taking a self defense class? I'm a boy and I'm taking a self-defense class. The instructor said they do teach kick to groin attacks, it is shown through pads, not on the male students. My question is: would you girls knee, kick, punch any of the guys in the balls for real practice? Would you pretend it was an accident? Would you laugh at him after wards? What if the guy asked you to do it, and said he was wearing a cup? What if the boy asked you to do it but he was not wearing a cup? Would you kick him?
How to I get/write a waiver for my self defense class? I am going to be starting my own self defense/martial arts class soon and I was wondering where I get the injury waiver forms that state my students can't sue me if they stub their big toe while sparring, (or if I write them, how to do it). Please give me any information you have, including: personal experience, websites, etc. I am in the United States, in the southern part of the state of California. I don't need to know about third party legal issues, as many of you are saying, there is no protection from any attorney sueing me for one of my students kicking an old lady in the head, because it was me who taught him how to kick in the first place. I am not asking for "legal" advice, every martial arts studio must have all of its' students sign a liability waiver for the possibility of injuries being sustained while on the premises of the studio/school, this is normal. I merely need to know where to find these forms. Thank you all for your responses.
Is it legal to use a powerful gun for self defense? My dad bought me a Taurus Raging Bull chambered in .454 Casull for my 30th birthday last month. I love the feel of this gun, and despite the strong recoil, I am very accurate with it. My question to the gun experts is: If, in the very unfortunate circumstance I had to use it against another human being for self defense purposes, could I be charged with a crime for using a caliber described by many as overkill?
How do I turn off my self-defense mechanisms? I had a difficult childhood with a personality disordered mother who later turned schizophrenic, and I developed Reactive Attachment Disorder as a child. Now I find it extremely difficult to open up to people and receive love, and I do not desire physical proximity so much as other people do. I haven't had a sexual relationship despite being in my twenties but I've felt unrequited romance a number of times and I really desire to develop emotionally warm relationships, but I somehow keep applying my self-defense mechanisms unwantedly - maybe because I'm so much used to them. I also have a very low level of emotional intelligence. How can I get a better control of my thoughts and emotions? How can I open up to people?
How many of you ladies would attend a self-defense workshop? I have recently heard of a concept similar to a "Spa Party" but with self defense instead of beauty products. I am thinking of hosting one where you invite ladies to attend to learn basic self defense moves and buy self defense tools (mace, panic buttons, etc.). The workshop would cost $10 per person, and the host could use that venue to promote local self defense or martial arts schools. This is targetted for the average woman with little or no martial arts or self defense skills so the teachings are easy to understand. The certifying process costs about $200, so I wanted to know if there are women who would attend such an event.
Can plastic bullets in a standard handgun be used for self-defense? What are the disadvantages of using plastic bullets in a handgun for self-defense? What is the effective range? Do they have any stopping power -- how much does it hurt to be shot with them? Joe, are you f-ing kidding me dude? What about the folks from VA Tech -- are you saying they had it coming because they didn't choose a safer school? If a man seeks to harm me, I intend to be prepared to face him; and if you happen to be present, you'll thank me. Fyi -- I don't mean home-defense, I'm talking bullets used in a gun for concealed carry. I know that they’d be pretty weak, but at close enough range it will still be sufficient to stun/disable an opponent, right? What kind of range would this be?
What kind of self defense class should I take? I am 23 years old. I am tiny at 5'6" and 100 lbs (no, i don't starve myself....I'm just like this naturally) so I think I need to take a self defense class! At my size, what would you recommend? I don't want to break bones :). Thanks!
What is the kind of self-defense fitted to kids? Whoa! here i am again, i already asked a question yesterday, please helpme. . . my research paper is to be passed on thursday! please help me get an answer fast. . . what type of self defense could be applied to kids for them to be able to defend themselves?
What is the best marital art for self-defense? I'm thinking of taking a martial art for self defense, having a wife and 10-month old at home. Which one would be the best? I think I've narrowed it down to Tae Kwon Do, Karate, or Kung-Fu. Is it best to take one of these that emphasizes standing, so that a group could be taken on vs. something like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where going to the ground is emphasized?
Is it illegal to own a taser and use it for self-defense? I have two questions about tasers. 1. Is it illegal to own a taser? I live in California, if that matters. 2. If you own a taser and use it on someone who's, for example, mugging or beating you (in other words, self-defense), is that legal?
Why does the right of self-defense not apply in public school? I'm writing this in response to the "zero tolerance" policies popping up that have any student defending themselves in a physical altercation to be suspended, expelled or even arrested. By what legal authority does a school have to cancel out the right of self-defense which are on the books in states and localities of the USA? The Supreme Court decision of Tinker Vs. Des Moines held that students do not necessarily shed their constitutional freedoms at the schoolyard gate. Is there a court decision(s) or local/state/federal laws that cancel out a student's right to self-defense?
Which is the best Pistol for self defense ? I've been reading reviews and search goes on and on.... I would be buying my first pistol so let me know which is the best for self defense ? I am looking for a reliable, nice looking and not too heavy gun and most importantly "i would be carrying it every day" easy to carry and conceal ? I liked Beretta 92FS but not sure that it's the right deal for me, please let me know ?
