custom child safety gates? I have a very odd place between my living room and kitchen. Instead of it being two walls straight across, it has a corner effect. I need to have a child safety gate in this area to keep my kids away from the dangerous appliances and such. I only know of gates that meet wall to wall in a straight line. Is there a gate available for such an area?
I am attempting to install child safety gates. Directions call for 9/64 drill bit. Can I use another? Or, Do I have to go purchase 9/64 size bit? I have 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, and 3/16. Will one of these work without messing anything up? Please help.
What age is acceptable to remove child safety gates on stairs? My daughter is 3 years old and stays with her grandparents one night a month. They have a very tall staircase that has wood, no carpeting, and her room is upstairs, while they sleep downstairs. My mother thinks our daughter is old enough to not use the gate at the top of the stairs any longer, but my husband and I are concerned that she's still a little wobbly (especially after just having woken up) and there is a danger there. I've looked online for any info but would like some feedback from others who might have a similar situation. The thought of her falling scares me to death. How do you know when a child is old enough not to need safety gates?

What can I do? My 5 year old has learned to open the child safety gates? I have a 5 year old and a 22 month old...both girls...I have gates at the top and bottom of the stairs to stop the toddler from wandering and maybe falling downstairs at night (she sleeps in a toddler bed) This morning woke up and it was oddly quiet...that was because the 5 year old had woken up and quietly gone into the toddlers room...they had then sneaked downstairs together as the 5 year old has suddenly learned to open he very stiff safety gate! They had gotten themselves a tin of biscuits and sat down to watch tv! I reckon they had been there an hour or more before I woke up....my 5 year old used to be too nervous to do anything like this...but now her sister is bigger she seems to have gotten braver! There was a terrible mess....and I am worried now...I sleep very heavily and I think it must have been about 5 AM that they got up....we usually get up at 6.30 am....I could set an alarm clock I suppose...but that would mean me rising before 5 am! What do other Mothers do about early rising sneaky kids?

Child Safety gate? Does anyone know where to get child safety boards instead of the child safety gate? See I've a problem. I don't have a child at home but a little puppy who enjoys entering my father's work-room where there are alot of dangerous tools all over the place. I would like to purchase a simple board to place at the entrance of the room door, to prevent my puppy from coming in. But this should not be just any ordinary board. It should function the way a child safety gate functions, which means it can be opened both ways by adults who choose to walk in and out. Please recommend!
My 2 boys are breaking thru the child safety stuff! What can I do? My boys are 2 & 3 yrs. old. I call them "my little Hercules'!" They break thru every barrier I place for their protection! I put those push down locks for drawers, so that they don't open them, and all they do is pull the drawers until the safety breaks! Then they end up throwing out their clothes all over their room! I even put those hook and eyes at my height , to keep them from opening the doors to other rooms and bathrooms, and they work together to grab my office chair and roll it out into the hall and stand up on it, and unhook the eye! And open the door! I didn't teach them any of this! How do they know? And I even put those magnetic locks on the oven and fridge. (Waste of money!) And I even took their room door down because they broke it! So I have a child gate to keep them in their room during nap time, and through out the night until morning. But they break thru by taking turns, kicking and pushing thru the gate til it falls over! I'm losing money on all this safety Help!
Installing a gate for child safety at the top of the stairs is easy and no problem. What is available mid way My worry is when the child falls from the top stair with stairs being so high with today's 10 foot ceilings on the first floor. What can I do to help catch them in case of a fall to prevent injury or other.

Need help with child safety gate at top of stairs with metal banister!!!? We live in a raised rancy style house, so from our livingroom, there are stairs that go down to the front door. The one side is a flat wall and on the other is a cast iron type banister. I need advice on a good gate for this set up. Specific brands, where you found them, if you had one that worked great, or was awful! I know it needs to be mounted to the wall, and I have found a few "kits" that you can mount to a banister so you don't need to drill into the banister, however, they are to be mounted to wooden (bigger) banisters, not the spiral cast iron type. Please, any help!!!
When did you take off your child safety gate? at the top of the stairs? I now live in a quad level home with 2 main stairways that are about 8 steps each...I used to live in an apartment that had a full set stairway and I kept a gate at the top. Now that we moved, Olivia seems to be doing good with these 2 stairways. Shes had one close call in the middle of one stairway, but caught herself. Since shes doing so well with them I don't feel like they are completely necessary. Olivia will be 2 next month by the way. I do put 1 up at night when she goes to bed! Sorry I forgot to mention that!

Looking for safety gate? We need some creative minds out there... We have a longer than normal (76" long) entrance way into our living room which we are trying to block off so our 1 year old daughter doesn't leave that area. Unfortunately most child safety gates aren't long enough. We have been wracking our brains trying to come up with a creative, yet safe barrier. Any out of the box ideas are welcome. Please help!

What's the best way to eliminate jealousy with my 2 dogs? F white Shephard and M pointer/beagle mix. F is very hyperactive, more independent, extremely playful/agile and can be a little pushy w/humans, (barks when she drops the ball at your feet when she's ready to play fetch and you're not) but also very submissive and responsive to correction. M is very low-key, more stubborn, prefers sleeping and cuddling to playing ball, sometimes skiddish about strange things like walking anywhere NEAR a child safety gate (will bark and refuse to walk past it even if it is not restricting his access to the room). The M came into our home 4 wks before F and they're only 8 wks apart in age. The M is the one who is "allowed" to sleep in bed w/the humans. If the F is in bed with us and the M comes around, F hops right off - without any confrontation from M. Yet, F is very vocal of her jealousy when we greet them after being out. She mouths him, moans, rumbles, etc. If I praise the M - the F will come running downstairs to get in on the action. We have had the dogs for 2 years now. I think allowing them to settle it might be the right approach but I love them equally. If I'm laying on the sectional watching tv and they bother want to snuggle, I don't want to ignore one. I would prefer to have them both there - but it seems that I am creating friction. Same thing when I come home, I want to pet BOth - not just the one who has asserted themselves as the leader of the pack. And if I give the F attention first, she still gets vocal and mouthy when I start to show affection to the M.

Thanks I should also specify that my son has behavioral problems and developmental delays where he often does what he wants and doesn't care about the consequences..I am working with doctors on diagnosing his problems, but in the meantime I need to keep him (and my home!) safe.

Have you or anyone you know bought this baby gate? I need to buy a babygate for my daycare, from my dining room to living room, (the doorway is about 50 inches across) so I was looking online for a wide one. I found one but I'm unsure if I should get it since it has no reviews. Do you or anyone you know have the following gate? Would you recommend it? http://www.child-safety-gates.com/scstore/p-1031544BB.html thank u so much!
How do you handle safety gates in regards to older children? My daughter is almost 5. My son is 13 months. We have a safety gate blocking off the hallway so that my son does not go into the bathroom, bedrooms, or basement. We cannot keep the doors shut, because of ventilation issues and because the cat needs to get to his litter box in the basement. My daughter is allowed access to these areas, but currently has to climb over the safety gate to get to them. This doesn't feel quite safe to me. What are some other solutions? I cannot lift her over the gate everytime and we cannot put a stool there because then my son would climb on it. Are we stuck with the climbing? Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't think she is strong enough to unlatch it on her own. Plus the arm is on the opposite side of where she is most of the time bcause we don't want our son pulling on it.
Is this an alternative to crate training? thinking of an alternative for my pomeranian puppy when he gets here thinking of just having a small doggy bed with a child safety gate around it (just feels more comfortable..i cant stand the look of the crates) and then taking him out like crate training.. but just the bed & gate being the alternative to do the crate my first puppy so i am pretttty nervous for how im going to go about housetraining him
How do I stop my puppie from barking??? Where can I find an accorion-style safety gate? When I was a little girl, my parents had a gate that blocked me and my little sister from getting into the laundry room. The gate was mounted to the wall on one side of the doorway, and it opend/closed by expanding/contracting like an accordion. It was a wooden gate, and when open, the gate had diamond-shaped "holes" in it. I've tried searching for accorion gates online, and all I come up with are sites talking about how they're dangerous for children and shouldn't be used any more. Well, I don't HAVE any children, so that doesn't matter to me. What I need is a gate that will allow my cat to get into the bathroom to access her litter box but will keep my roommate's dog OUT of the bathroom because he does his business in there on my floor and I'm sick of cleaning it up. The accordian gate is the perfect solution because alothough the dog won't fit through the openings, the cat will. Does anyone know where I can find one of these?
Another thing that concerns me about the 'fox' story .......? These twins are 9 months old, at the just about to start walking stage (if they hadnt already). Regardless, there would have been child-safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs (since its already been reported that the children were sleeping UPSTAIRS). Now you may argue that they left both of these gates open because the children were asleep, however I know that just out of habit, for my own peace of mind, even if my kid was asleep, I would close the gates behind me. Why? Because it takes all of two seconds, and in the unlikely event they did get out of the cot, at the very least they would only be on one level, not crawl/walk to the top of the stairs and then fall down. Plus its just a force of habit, you just get in the habit of always closing the gates, so that you dont accidentally 'forget' to do it one day with disasterous consequences. So one of two things happened here: The child gates were locked and somehow this fox managed to jump over both sets of gates (at the top and the bottom) without making a single sound (and how determined is that fox to get to some soiled nappies to be able to do that). or the gates were open, which might be fine, but still seems to me to be playing a little fast and loose with their safety considering there is a 5 or 6 metre drop awaiting them .... La Volpe - I totally agree with you on the count of all these neighbours all declaring it to be some epidemic, yet if that was the case why did the parents leave the door wide open and then leave both child safety gates open to allow the fox to get upstairs. This would make them negligent. They can't have it both ways. Either they were negligent because they knew there was a problem but did nothing to prevent the attack, or there was no problem in the first place which is why they never forsaw it. But they can't have it both ways. Nice guy .......... babies don't have to be at walking age to need babygates. Having one of your own, you should know how fast they can crawl along the ground at 9 months. Wouldnt take them long to get from one end of a room to the edge of the staircase.
Buying child home safety equipment..? I need to now start buying safety equipment for my home, like stair gates, plug socket protectors, fire guards etc.. which are all quite expensive. I was wondering if there is any help towards getting these as im a single parent on a very low income. i was made redundant whilst on maternity leave and my husband died before baby was born. i have had the sure start maternity grant but the £500 was spent on a cot, clothes, nappies, pram etc.. if anyone knows of any schemes out there to help provide these will be great... else its walking around those charity shops in hope to find something.. *reply to proud* do you have children? if so you should understand that all these things add up.. a stair gate may only be £30 but you need 2 for top and bottom of the stairs.. fire guard..another £30+.. then u need plug, door and corner protectors, cabinet locks for under sinks etc.. all adds up. you may be fortunate enough to say it doesnt cost alot.. but having to save up for all these things means that only my baby eats that week
Can the same stair gate be used as a safety device for either children or pets? I am currently researching stair gates for both myself and a friend-- one of us needs a gate for pets and the other for children... wondering if the same type is safe for either use.
Did you child proof your house? Or, do you teach your kids that there is somethings they can't get into? I visited my aunt today, she has 17 month old son. Her house is the most child proof place I've ever been to!! Cabinet locks, oven lock, fridge latch, some weird door knobs that made it impossible for my 3 year old to open! Outlet covers, some padded covers for her dinner table, coffee tables (they're on the corners) and the weirdest thing of all, something on her toilet paper roll that I had hard time figuring out! Is a safety gate really necessary to prevent a kid from going into a kitchen that is kid proof?!?! What kind of child safety/proof things do you have in your house? All I have is a rubber ducky faucet cover for the bath tub.
Children treated as animals! Oh, the horror!!!? I've noticed this lovely trend of treatin children as animals. What are people thinking? They cage them at night in these devices they call "cribs"! They restrain them against their will in these devices they call "car seats"! They block their paths with these things they call "Child Safety Gates"! They block them out of cupboards and drawers with "Child-proofing devices"! Oh the horror! These lazy parents!!! Why don't they simply teach their children how to behave and follow directions? What kind of people treat their children as animals?? It breaks my heart to think of all the children being mistreated this way. And the newest horror they are subjecting these poor, helpless children to... a leash! OMG! What's next? How dare these people, let these children walk happily and safely. They should be roaming Walmart freely at will, or better yet, restrained properly in a stroller, miserable as can be! Your thoughts? Have I missed any new-fangled torture devices in my list? ;) ;) Am feeling alittle plucky today... can you tell? Okay, so I forgot about the bottles and playpens... seems my list is incomplete. lol. :) Sarah: This question is "tongue-in-cheek". I very recently read a rather derrogative question regarding the usage of child safety leashes. It irritated me, what can I say? I find it absurd, that you can use a crib, a carseat, strap a miserable child in a stroller, and be a good parent, but if you let the child walk, happy and safe... all of a sudden you are the worst parent in the world? I think not! My point was simply this, we restrain our young offspring in many different ways, everyday, what is the difference between a leash and a crib/carseat/stroller/etc? How is one acceptable and the other not?
Toddler won't go to bed? We recently switched my 28-month old daughter from a crib to a bed, because she would no longer sleep in her crib, although she would sleep in my bed alone with no problems. (She'll no longer do this). However, we have ongoing problems with getting her to go to bed and stay there. She's very tall and smart for her age. She can open her bedroom door and she knows how to open the child safety gates we put at her door. Therefore, it's becoming impossible to get her to stay in her room. I have used a safety latch to keep the doorknob from turning on her side, however I worry this may be traumatizing for her. She also screams and whimpers non-stop if I do this. I don't know what to do. I'm at my wit's end. If I lay down with her, she just plays with my hair and fidgets, not sleeping even if I pretend to sleep. I'm exhausted from the lack of sleep, and I even broke down crying last night. I just don't know what to do with her. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions with this?
does anyone know how to make a dog stop barking at every lil noise or when someone comes to the door? I have several dogs...all small breeds and I can't seem to stop them from barking at every lil noise, or when someone knocks on the door or rings the doorbell. I've resorted to putting one of those child safety gates around the front door entry so the dogs can't jump on the people that come to the door. I just want them to stop barking at everything....they hear the door open to the house next door when they let their dog out and mine run to the fence ( a 6ft concrete fence ) and start barking. Please, if anyone knows how to stop the barking, besides having them de-barked...give me some ideas. Thank you.
I need to find a stair gate that is 34" tall. Can't afford to have one made Help!? I finally convinced my husband to replace the iron stair railing with wood. We found a carpenter and bought a standard child stair safety gate that he was to install when the railing was done. Upon completion he informed me that the gate is too short, we need a 34" tall gate. I can't find one anywhere. I'm 8 mths pregnant with my 3rd child, I have a 3 and1 yr old, this is something I don't want to deal with. Anyone knows where I can get one?
Advice please! My cats are like two naughty children!!!? Hi All :) I'd love your advice please! I have two, 1yr old cats, a male Ragdoll, and a female Tabby (both spayed/ neutered) I love them both dearly, but some nights I want to break their necks! :) They are both indoor only cats, and recently they have started misbehaving during the night. I'm finding this incredibly stressful as I'm 8.5 months pregnant, and really need the sleep.... What happens is that at about 3 - 4 a.m, I can hear them carrying on like lunatics throughout the house, jumping up on counters, knocking things over, scratching, etc..... I know this sounds like boredom, but they have PLENTY of stimulating toys, a climbing frame, etc. Both are in excellent health, eating well, etc. The only thing I can think of that has changed is that we have put up a pet/child safety gate in our bedroom, preventing them from coming into our room. They previously were allowed in and used to sleep, quite soundly, with us. Obviously, this is now non negotiable, as when our baby comes, I don't want them in the room with us for health and safety reasons (hair, and the risk of suffocation) Perhaps this has stressed them out? How can I help them, and also, can I get them to stop jumping up on counters....especially the kitchen counter (not very hygienic) Thanks so much, and I look forward to your replies...... xxx

Please help me with my Rescue Puppy!!!!? Me and partner rescued a Puppy approximately 6weeks ago. We are unsure of her breed although we know she definately has staffie in her mixed with possible Jack Russell, we are also unsure of her age, vet believes she is roughly 6months. The main problem here is she is suffering from seperation anxiety and she is becomming very destructive. This is very hard as both me and partner both work, he works shifts and I only work to 2pm so at the most Bella is left alone for 6hours. However she crys, whines and barks when we are not here. When we first got her she had the run of the hall and kitchen she destroyed our new carpet which was only down 8 weeks, we then pulled it up and left it with the old floor tiles, she then pulled and chewed the electric cable case off and begun chewing the wires, we therefore brought a dog gate (bigger version off a child safety gate) and put it on the kitchen so she just had the run of the kitchen - however she has found a way to get over it and back into the hall. I dont want her in the hall because i dont want to come home and find her dead cos of the electric cables (they have been repaired, but im sure she would have another go) I tried taking the gate off and just shutting the door on her that way i know she cant get out but obviously this makes her bark, cry, whine a lot more because she cant see. I really dont know what to try next, the vet suggested crate training her but how do I do that after she has been here 6 weeks with alot of space to move around. We have also tried the D.A.P Diffuser but that has not helped her at all. We have been going to puppy school for a few weeks but of course that is just helping with the lead walking and basic commands Please Help - I really dont know what to do next, I dont want to rehome her because she is now my pet and I love her to bits, but i just dont know what to do best for me and her!! Any help is appreciated
My dog hurt her shoulder and now has a moving bump. Is this a contusion? Of course I'm taking my dog to the vet but in the meantime I am wondering if anyone can tell me what they think about this. The bump wasn't there and when I got home it was. She plows through the child safety gate so my husband locked it up real tight but had to leave a couple inches of space on the bottom because of the baseboards. I think she climbed under the gate. One of her nails are broken off almost into the quick. Now she has a bump on her shoulder and you can move it around. All her bones seem to be in place. She doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain even when you touch and move the bump. She is walking, running, and playing as normal. Thanks
My Dog hates me! He loves my partner and snaps at me or anyone else he can!? My Dog is a 2 year old jack Russel cross. We got him last christmas from my partners brother who gave him away because he had children and became snappy. They also use to lock him in the kitchen all the time using a child safety gate so they could still see him.But the kids did play with him. He met me and my partner when he was a pup and would snuggle in my coat and go to sleep. They did not abuse him in any way. They took him for walks and gave him lots of attention. They took him to the vets and got his balls chopped but this still didn't help. so we took him. We let him go anywhere in the house becasue we felt tight him being locked in the kitchen all that time, so he had a big house to roam round. He also sleeps in our bed, his bed is next to ours but he likes to sleep with us. Since we got him he was snappy towards me and loves my partner to bits. we cant cuddle, i cant get in bed, i cant touch my partner or he snaps and so on........ i have tried being the pack leader and putting him in his place but he did bite me when i did this so i wont be doing that again! When my partner goes out he goes upstairs to bed ( my partner is out now and hes gone to bed) but sometimes he will sit with me (if i put the fire on) or he wants to sit by the window waiting for my partner to come home. I do give him love and treats. I give him attention but if hes sat with my partner he growls at me. If i get to close he snaps at me. my partner says he warning me so its my fault but i cant understand if im trying to give him love or show affection why would he bite me? Its not just me everyone who comes to our house or even on the street he tries to bite. We were on a walk and a stranger will go to stroke him he lets him do this for a min then tries to snap his hand off! so for this reason we cant take him to training. And he barks at other dogs so we cant get another one. When my partners brother visits us he goes all crazy and shows him so much love like he missed him for ages. I just dont no what to do i love my dog to bits and would do anything for him i just want him to like me as much as he loves my partner :-( Please help Thanks.
Child safety gate over 63 inches? I need a child safety gate that is over 63" wide. The widest gates i seem to find are all 60" do you know of any?

My 2 year old drowned our pet hamster in our sun conure's water dish. How do I go about this?!? My 2 year old plowed down her child safety gate, and basically ransacked our entire house at 4 in the morning. I discovered the hamsters cage dismantled and scattered everywhere, when I asked her where Butterfinger was... she answered with 'Lola' (our sun conure) so i thought that i was going to find her ripped apart, but instead, I found that my daughter had drowned her in 2 inches of water... I don't know how to explain to her that that is WRONG and you ARE NOT mean to animals... I have been around animals my ENTIRE life, and I refuse to get rid of them because she should be able to learn. Please, Help?!
How can I help my possibly abused bunny? I bought my rabbit from a pet store, and he seemed like a normal rabbit, however he has a few issues - possibly from abuse. Whenever more than one person is in the room, he runs like mad and hides. When I try to feed him, he pulls the food out of my hand and throws it, or bites at me when I try to remove his food bowl to refill it. Sometimes as I'm petting him, he suddenly becomes aggressive, grunts, and/or bites me hard enough to hurt. Last, if I leave the room he lives in and close the door completely, he panics and runs like crazy (I've purchased a child safety gate that allows him to see and hear what's going on outside, but keeps him in my only bunny-proofed room). I've had rabbits before (male and female), but they've never exhibited these sorts of behaviors. What can I do to build his confidence and modify his behavior? Anyone had similar experiences? He is spayed and we've had him since November 07.
Does my dog have a Hematoma? Does it have to be drained? I am wondering if anyone can tell me what they think about this. The bump wasn't there and she climbed under the child safety gate and hurt her shoulder. Now she has a bump you can move around. All her bones are in place. She doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain even when you touch and move the bump. She is walking, running, and playing as normal. The bump shrunk a little over night. It was about the size of a golf ball now a little bit smaller. I was going to take her to the vet immediately but when I called the vet and told them what happened they said it was probably just a hematoma and it will probably go away on its own. I didn't feel worried at all and then I read something about how you have to have it drained ... ? Any thoughts? Thanks.
I had a strange dream, what is the meaning? I was in my in-law's house. At first I was laying over my mother in law's bed. It had new sheets on.. they were baby blue and the bed skirt was yellow. That's nothing like the sheets she has now. I also walked through the hallway and looked in the bathroom. She had my rugs on the floor (they turned up missing while I lived there and I swore she still had them)... there was a child safety gate across the entrance and the floors were clean (no clothes). It was a really weird dream because my mother in law is a very messy person and her house looks nothing like this. What's teh meaning? I looked up the meaning of the bedspread. "To notice or buy bedspread in your dream, represents your open sexuality and outward beauty. The design and look of the bedspread may be a clue as to what you are looking for sexually." It creeps me out to think of sexual things and my mother in law's house, wouldn't you say? Maybe that's true about the child... i had a baby last November and I've been thinking of having another, but my husband only wants one. I wish we could pick the sex, because i'd want a boy.. I already have a little girl :)
Is this a Hematoma? Does it have to be drained? I am wondering if anyone can tell me what they think about what happened to my dog. I'm not getting any answers in the dog section so I thought I would try this one. The bump wasn't there and she climbed under the child safety gate and hurt her shoulder. Now she has a bump you can move around. All her bones are in place. She doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain even when you touch and move the bump. She is walking, running, and playing as normal. I need window safety net or a gate? We live on the 1st floor and all our windows open from the bottom up which is very unsafe for the little kids. Unfortunately we cannot change the windows because we do not own the flat. We would like to be able to open the windows as wide as we could. So, we have been looking for a safety net or a gate which we could fit to the wall to prevent the child falling out of the window. However, we cannot find anything apart from window locks which would be useless in our situation. Thank you! Safety netting would have been excellent but nothing so far on the Internet.
My child climbs out of the Pack N Play, what can I do? Just last week, my child decided that he can climb out of the Pack N Play *play pen/portable bed*. Its posed a tremendous safety hazard for us, as he runs up and down the stairs and that is dangerous. We put baby gates up and he can throw them down the stairs, take them out of the doors, etc. What other enclosures exist for a child of his age? What can I do? I have work to do and cannot watch him 24/7! He is just under 2. He is also very hyperactive.
how to stop a 1 yr old getting through a doorway [without buying a safety gate]? ok, im a playgroup leader, so i get left to solve all the problems, lol our playgroup sessions are held in a community centre so i cant just attatch walls and screws into doorways, so i guess a safety gate is a no in out group there is a deaf mum, so she cant hear her child and by the time she finds him hes in the toilet block playing in the bowl water, she only has to turn her head for 2 seconds and hes gone, hes very active there is a door to the toilet block but i have to keep that open with a door stopper as kids are in and out constantly and fingers will get jammed as mine did on the 1st day we were there, so from that day we must keep it open the whole time we put a toy box in front of the doorway but he just pushed it over and got through,,, please any ideas on how to keep him out of the toilet??? no other mum has a problem with the toilets block, so i find i cant spend a fortune of our fees to buy an expensive gate,, i need a simple cheap idea,,, HELP,, xxxxxxxxx

I never put beds near windows because this may happen! What tips can you give parents that may have jsut not thought of "What could happen if! " I also tape up all my roller blind cables as they are can be used to hang a child, if they get caught up in them! Keep saucepan and frying pan handles turned away from little hands! Always check the keetle is out of reach! Any hot drinks up high! Stair gates closed! Any tips welcome! Thanks
"Rights of Access" to drains - can I install a gate? I live on a plot of land where there are three dwellings. We have a private road that runs between the rear of the houses and the gardens, but I am the last house so my neighbours do not have a right of way across my part of the driveway. However they do have a right of access, but purely to two manholes sited on my drive. Can I install a gate? - I have young children and the new neighbours have large dogs and a lot of vehicles coming and going, so I am concerned about the children's safety. In answer to some queries - I live in England and there are no communal areas. I have checked my deeds and they are very explicit about the rights of way i.e none across my land.
At what age did you remove the sides of the cotbed? Hi, My daughter is 17 months old now and sleeps in a Cotbed. What age was your child when you removed the sides of the cotbed and put one of those safety sleep gates by the side? Just wondering so I know a rough guide for my first :)
Have we become overly-obsessed with safety? Every day people are trying to sell their safety related products. I recently went to a car lot, and the first thing the sales man tried to tell me was how the safe the car would be for my kids. Don' get me wrong. I want my kids to be in something safe. I'm just really turned off by when someone tries to prey on that. We are constantly hearing "what's more important than your child's safety" The answer is obvious. Nothing is. The problem is that I've become jaded by this "guilt marketing" as I like to call it that I immediately run the opposite directions when I sense these tactics being used. The problem with using safety as a selling point is that you can use it as a trump card for to sell anything. Weapons, alarms, gated communities, hummers, pills, all sold in the name of safety. Has safety overtaken quality of life?
When you moved your child from a cot into a toddler bed...? How long did it take them to settle? Did you have a lot of trouble with them getting up and running around at first? My 20 month old is being moved from a cot to a toddler bed in the next week or so when I move house, I'd been worrying it was too soon but I witnessed him climbing out of his cot with great ease last night when he thought I wasn't looking so at least I know it's necessary now. I plan to put a safety gate over his bedroom door at the new place, and the room will be fully babyproof. Do you think, if he does run about, it would be wise just to let him get on with it inside the room until he gets tired and drops off of his own accord, or should I continually go back and put him in his bed until he gets the idea? Tonya - your TD was not from me. People need to get a life if they would judge you for that. Thanks for sharing.

Need help with 1 yr. old crawling out of crib? My son not only climbed out of the crib but we even bought the mesh tent for the top and he got out of that as well. He is 16 months old and quiet as a mouse. We have a toddler bed but I am scared he will wake up and sneak around and get into something. He also gets over safety gates and there are other children in the house who forget to close bathroom doors, pick up choking hazards, etc. Any ideas?
How do you discipline an unruly two-year old? I have another one month old child and since he was born my two year old has become a nightmare. She will not play with her regular toys and gets into everything and we have tried putting child proof locks on everything and put up baby gates only nothing works to keep her out of things. She climbs things and knows how to pick locks. She locks and unlocks doors and run around the house. I sent her to her room once for time out. We thought the room was childproofed enough for her and it wasn't she broke the window picked up a pane of glass and set it on her bed. She walked back into the living room like nothing was wrong and she had blood all over her foot. She had to had to have stiches, but fortunately the cut was not as bad as it seemed, but what do you do? She is becoming a safety hazard to herself and we need to get this behavior undercontrol before she decides to do something that could endup hurting herself worse. What should I do?
Does your child's school have a lock down type policy? I have 2 children in elementary school, they just went back this week. The school will not allow parents on campus at any time. Parent volunteers are allowed but they must have a current TB test and have had fingerprints done with the local police/sheriff. I am all for safety, but on the 2nd day of school when your child is crying because they are unsure of where they are supposed to be and the people at the gate say you can't go in, what do you do?? What is your school like? (this is a public school in California)
My three year gets into everything!? My three year old is constantly getting into things... he has poured laundry soap all over the kitchen as well as veg. oil. Yesterday he took the chocolate syrup and poured it all over his carpeted room, by the way how can i get that out? He will take the cereal and pour it all over. Child safety locks don't work, and neither do gates, he climbs over them. I don't know what to do, any ideas would be great!
Is it illegal to care for children in my own home when I am not regsitered with the Care Commision? Is it illegal for me to care for somebody elses children in my own home without being registered as a Childminder with the Care Commision? I live in Scotland. I have had people ask me to care for their child part time during the week. My house is child friendly/safe as I have a one year old son so all the safety gates/fire guards etc are up. I wouldnt have more than one child at a time. If the parent knows I am not registered, is it legal for me to care for their child and accept payment from them?

do guardian ad litems usually recommend 50/50 custody? do guardian ad litems usually recommend 50/50 custody? in a case where both parents love their kids but one parents home may be slightly bigger and more room and less cluttered and has safety gates cabinet latches and all that stuff. that parent and spouse have 2 cars pay their bills on time , no government assistance and in general are financially stable and have a pretty good family support network that the kids see grandparents and such with then the other parent currently has custody but they have a small single wide mobile home for 2 adults and 4 kids, a cluttered house (not dirty with food everywhere just lots of junk) continues to get cars repossessed, has had elec turned off, eviction notice for not paying rent, gets food donations from church since cant afford food at times has phone and cable turned off cause cant pay bill. also don't take kids to dr cause they cant pay the co-pmt for the visit or for medications nor if they don't have a car at the time cant get there. also have lied to other parent saying they took child to dr when child was ill but medical records prove that they never did take the child to the dr like they said. and 2 year old had cavities and knew knew but didn't get them fixed while on medicaid ( free to fix) and when the child was almost 5 child complains about teeth parent still wont take them since now child is on other parents insurance so would have co pmts they cant afford. and when gets notice saying they are being taken to court for child custody they finally take child to dentist and dentist says child now has 3 cavities and no signs of previous dental work so that is proof they never took care of previous cavities when child was 2. and parent recently had a transplant is on disability. in neither house is there any drugs, smoking or alcohol, don't think kids are being beaten but get a little more physical discipline than they should but one child has said they get hit in mouth if they say something bad with the parent that cant pay the bills. would you think a guardian ad litem would recommend 50/50 custody? I know they are there for what is best for the kids and it is usually best to spend equal time with both parents so would they recommend this in this situation first off im not the one doing the robbing im the one being robbed. and im the one that has recomended mediation to come to a mutual agreement but other parent just says they should be with them and me only every other weekend. i want my kids to have both parents and step parents that care about them not just care about hurting parents feeligns that is actually what i am requesting is them get everyother weekend, shared holidays and i even added easter adn 4th july so its fare since one parent usually has that holiday fall during their time and the other never gets kids for that holiday. and they get atleast a month in the summer and every friday evening well I live in a mobile home just a larger one so im not dissing him for that. the transplant is not why he cant afford anything sicne well before the transplant he kept quiting jobs and refused to work cause he didnt make enough money. and i think i am being quite nice seeing as i was 15 and he 24 when i got pregnant and he was a adult that should have know better than to take sexual advantage of a troubled teen. the kids are happy kids and knwo both parents and step parents love them but they dont like it that their dad just lays in bed playing video games all the time and will not play with them or take them to the park when he is a stay at home dad. RESPONSIBLE PARENT WOULD SEEK MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE WHEN NEEDED EVEN IF THEY HAD TO EAT OUT LESS TO PAY FOR IT. SORRY BUT MEDICAL NEGLECT IS NOT BEING A LOVING PARENT WHEN YOUR CHILD IS CRYING FOR A WEEK STRAIGHT WITH A PAINFUL EAR INFECTION AND YOU DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. !!! SORRY BUT HIS $150 A MONTH IN DISABILITY FOR THE KIDS ENDS THIS MONTH THAT IS PART OF THE REASON IM TRYING OT GET THE KIDS SINCE HE HAS NO MORE DISABILITY AND WILL NOT EVEN START TO LOOK FOR A JOB. HOW WILL HE PROVIDE FOOD FOR THE KIDS SITTING ON HIS BUTT PLAYING VIDEO GAMES.
A cat in the same house as children but seperated? In the future (after I get my degree and save up some money) I am opening an in home daycare. It will be ages 2-5 and I will have my home set up with an activity/learning area (with attached bathroom), lunch area, and a fenced in yard. It will all be on the first floor. Now, the thing is, I have a cat. I plan to have the daycare open from about 7-5:30 and during those times my cat will be upstairs in a room that is inaccessible to the children (door shut, safety gates by stairs). The litter box and her food will also be upstairs in that room so the children will never come in contact with them. Every morning, after my cat is upstairs and before the children come, I plan on using a swiffer to clean the floors and the toys will be disinfected every day (especially because children pass germs so easily). She usually avoids people when they are over anyway, and she is a sweet cat, but I would still be sure they would never come in contact with each other (because a bite is a bite, whether it was provoked by the cat or child). By the time I open the daycare she will be a senior cat (she's bordering on adult/senior now) and she sleeps most of the day anyway. She is also up to date on all her shots and is healthy. Would you, as a parent, be dissuaded from putting your child in a clean, safe, loving enviornment with a liscenced professional, just because there is a cat in the home? Now, I understand if your child has allergies but I'm referring to those whose children do not have allergies. Thanks for the answers so far. I know many households have pets but I've also heard about many parent's who think they are absolutely horrible creatures (which I don't get). And, like someone said, cat's won't whine to be by people. I do plan on getting a dog eventually (I'm an animal person) but by then I will probably have a seperate center. Or I will put it outside and have a doggy door to a heated garage. Just wanted to get some person opinions on the matter. : ) Whoops, I meant personal opinions. Michelle - Oh, don't worry about my kitty! As of now she has the full run of the house and she can always be found in one of two places, fast asleep! I would never do it to a really active animal, I would feel horrible, but with my cats tempermanent she won't even notice anything different. : )
I have a 2 year old and I need the best swimming pool fence out there. Is there a national pool fence compa? I need a pool fence that is strong and I'm looking for a pool gate that will swing shut. I would like to use a big company, preferably a national chain, instead of a small company. When it comes to my child's safety I only want to go with the best. Thank you.
Where to buy a safety gate for around my pool in Abu Dhabi? I have small children and a pool in our yard, and I need to find someone that can supply and install a safety gate around my pool in Abu Dhabi, do you know of anyone or a company that does this in Abu Dhabi?
Those, who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor? I have heard this quoted by Roosevelt. re: Re: giving up our freedoms. What was he really saying? I just don't take it the way it gets quoted. Not looking for an argument looking for a discussion. thanks Our Documents: Franklin Roosevelt's Annual Address to Congress - The "Four Freedoms" January 6, 1941 Mr. President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Seventy-seventh Congress: I address you, the Members of the Seventy-seventh Congress, at a moment unprecedented in the history of the Union. I use the word "unprecedented," because at no previous time has American security been as seriously threatened from without as it is today. Since the permanent formation of our Government under the Constitution, in 1789, most of the periods of crisis in our history have related to our domestic affairs. Fortunately, only one of these--the four-year War Between the States--ever threatened our national unity. Today, thank God, one hundred and thirty million Americans, in forty-eight States, have forgotten points of the compass in our national unity. It is true that prior to 1914 the United States often had been disturbed by events in other Continents. We had even engaged in two wars with European nations and in a number of undeclared wars in the West Indies, in the Mediterranean and in the Pacific for the maintenance of American rights and for the principles of peaceful commerce. But in no case had a serious threat been raised against our national safety or our continued independence. What I seek to convey is the historic truth that the United States as a nation has at all times maintained clear, definite opposition, to any attempt to lock us in behind an ancient Chinese wall while the procession of civilization went past. Today, thinking of our children and of their children, we oppose enforced isolation for ourselves or for any other part of the Americas. That determination of ours, extending over all these years, was proved, for example, during the quarter century of wars following the French Revolution. While the Napoleonic struggles did threaten interests of the United States because of the French foothold in the West Indies and in Louisiana, and while we engaged in the War of 1812 to vindicate our right to peaceful trade, it is nevertheless clear that neither France nor Great Britain, nor any other nation, was aiming at domination of the whole world. In like fashion from 1815 to 1914-- ninety-nine years-- no single war in Europe or in Asia constituted a real threat against our future or against the future of any other American nation. Except in the Maximilian interlude in Mexico, no foreign power sought to establish itself in this Hemisphere; and the strength of the British fleet in the Atlantic has been a friendly strength. It is still a friendly strength. Even when the World War broke out in 1914, it seemed to contain only small threat of danger to our own American future. But, as time went on, the American people began to visualize what the downfall of democratic nations might mean to our own democracy. We need not overemphasize imperfections in the Peace of Versailles. We need not harp on failure of the democracies to deal with problems of world reconstruction. We should remember that the Peace of 1919 was far less unjust than the kind of "pacification" which began even before Munich, and which is being carried on under the new order of tyranny that seeks to spread over every continent today. The American people have unalterably set their faces against that tyranny. Every realist knows that the democratic way of life is at this moment being' directly assailed in every part of the world--assailed either by arms, or by secret spreading of poisonous propaganda by those who seek to destroy unity and promote discord in nations that are still at peace. During sixteen long months this assault has blotted out the whole pattern of democratic life in an appalling number of independent nations, great and small. The assailants are still on the march, threatening other nations, great and small. Therefore, as your President, performing my constitutional duty to "give to the Congress information of the state of the Union," I find it, unhappily, necessary to report that the future and the safety of our country and of our democracy are overwhelmingly involved in events far beyond our borders. Armed defense of democratic existence is now being gallantly waged in four continents. If that defense fails, all the population and all the resources of Europe, Asia, Africa and Australasia will be dominated by the conquerors. Let us remember that the total of those populations and their resources in those four continents greatly exceeds the sum total of the population and the resources of the whole of the Western Hemisphere-many times over. In times like these it is immature--and incidentally, untrue--for anybody to brag that an unprepared America, single-handed, and with one hand tied behind its back, can hold off the whole world. No realistic American can expect from a dictator's peace international generosity, or return of true independence, or world disarmament, or freedom of expression, or freedom of religion -or even good business. Such a peace would bring no security for us or for our neighbors. "Those, who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." As a nation, we may take pride in the fact that we are softhearted; but we cannot afford to be soft-headed. We must always be wary of those who with sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal preach the "ism" of appeasement. We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests. I have recently pointed out how quickly the tempo of modern warfare could bring into our very midst the physical attack which we must eventually expect if the dictator nations win this war. There is much loose talk of our immunity from immediate and direct invasion from across the seas. Obviously, as long as the British Navy retains its power, no such danger exists. Even if there were no British Navy, it is not probable that any enemy would be stupid enough to attack us by landing troops in the United States from across thousands of miles of ocean, until it had acquired strategic bases from which to operate. But we learn much from the lessons of the past years in Europe-particularly the lesson of Norway, whose essential seaports were captured by treachery and surprise built up over a series of years. The first phase of the invasion of this Hemisphere would not be the landing of regular troops. The necessary strategic points would be occupied by secret agents and their dupes- and great numbers of them are already here, and in Latin America. As long as the aggressor nations maintain the offensive, they-not we--will choose the time and the place and the method of their attack. That is why the future of all the American Republics is today in serious danger. That is why this Annual Message to the Congress is unique in our history. That is why every member of the Executive Branch of the Government and every member of the Congress faces great responsibility and great accountability. The need of the moment is that our actions and our policy should be devoted primarily-almost exclusively--to meeting this foreign peril. For all our domestic problems are now a part of the great emergency. Just as our national policy in internal affairs has been based upon a decent respect for the rights and the dignity of all our fellow men within our gates, so our national policy in foreign affairs has been based on a decent respect for the rights and dignity of all nations, large and small. And the justice of morality must and will win in the end. Our national policy is this: First, by an impressive expression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to all-inclusive national defense. Second, by an impressive expression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to full support of all those resolute peoples, everywhere, who are resisting aggression and are thereby keeping war away from our Hemisphere. By this support, we express our determination that the democratic cause shall prevail; and we strengthen the defense and the security of our own nation. Third, by an impressive expression of the public will and without regard to partisanship, we are committed to the proposition that principles of morality and considerations for our own security will never permit us to acquiesce in a peace dictated by aggressors and sponsored by appeasers. We know that enduring peace cannot be bought at the cost of other people's freedom. In the recent national election there was no substantial difference between the two great parties in respect to that national policy. No issue was fought out on this line before the American electorate. Today it is abundantly evident that American citizens everywhere are demanding and supporting speedy and complete action in recognition of obvious danger. Therefore, the immediate need is a swift and driving increase in our armament production. Leaders of industry and labor have responded to our summons. Goals of speed have been set. In some cases these goals are being reached ahead of time; in some cases we are on schedule; in other cases there are slight but not serious delays; and in some cases--and I am sorry to say very important cases--we are all concerned by the slowness of the accomplishment of our plans. The Army and Navy, however, have made substantial progress during the past year. Actual experience is improving and speeding up our methods of production with every passing day. And today's best is not good enough for tomorrow. I am not satisfied with the progress thus far made. The men in charge of the program represent the best in training, in ability, and in patriotism. They are not satisfied with the progress thus far made. None of us will be satisfied until the job is done. No matter whether the original goal was set too high or too low, our objective is quicker and better results. To give you two illustrations: We are behind schedule in turning out finished airplanes; we are working day and night to solve the innumerable problems and to catch up. We are ahead of schedule in building warships but we are working to get even further ahead of that schedule. To change a whole nation from a basis of peacetime production of implements of peace to a basis of wartime production of implements of war is no small task. And the greatest difficulty comes at the beginning of the program, when new tools, new plant facilities, new assembly lines, and new ship ways must first be constructed before the actual materiel begins to flow steadily and speedily from them. The Congress, of course, must rightly keep itself informed at all times of the progress of the program. However, there is certain information, as the Congress itself will readily recognize, which, in the interests of our own security and those of the nations that we are supporting, must of needs be kept in confidence. New circumstances are constantly begetting new needs for our safety. I shall ask this Congress for greatly increased new appropriations and authorizations to carry on what we have begun. I also ask this Congress for authority and for funds sufficient to manufacture additional munitions and war supplies of many kinds, to be turned over to those nations which are now in actual war with aggressor nations. Our most useful and immediate role is to act as an arsenal for them as well as for ourselves. They do not need man power, but they do need billions of dollars worth of the weapons of defense. The time is near when they will not be able to pay for them all in ready cash. We cannot, and we will not, tell them that they must surrender, merely because of present inability to pay for the weapons which we know they must have. I do not recommend that we make them a loan of dollars with which to pay for these weapons--a loan to be repaid in dollars. I recommend that we make it possible for those nations to continue to obtain war materials in the United States, fitting their orders into our own program. Nearly all their materiel would, if the time ever came, be useful for our own defense. Taking counsel of expert military and naval authorities, considering what is best for our own security, we are free to decide how much should be kept here and how much should be sent abroad to our friends who by their determined and heroic resistance are giving us time in which to make ready our own defense. For what we send abroad, we shall be repaid within a reasonable time following the close of hostilities, in similar materials, or, at our option, in other goods of many kinds, which they can produce and which we need. Let us say to the democracies: "We Americans are vitally concerned in your defense of freedom. We are putting forth our energies, our resources and our organizing powers to give you the strength to regain and maintain a free world. We shall send you, in ever-increasing numbers, ships, planes, tanks, guns. This is our purpose and our pledge." In fulfillment of this purpose we will not be intimidated by the threats of dictators that they will regard as a breach of international law or as an act of war our aid to the democracies which dare to resist their aggression. Such aid is not an act of war, even if a dictator should unilaterally proclaim it so to be. When the dictators, if the dictators, are ready to make war upon us, they will not wait for an act of war on our part. They did not wait for Norway or Belgium or the Netherlands to commit an act of war. Their only interest is in a new one-way international law, which lacks mutuality in its observance, and, therefore, becomes an instrument of oppression. The happiness of future generations of Americans may well depend upon how effective and how immediate we can make our aid felt. No one can tell the exact character of the emergency situations that we may be called upon to meet. The Nation's hands must not be tied when the Nation's life is in danger. We must all prepare to make the sacrifices that the emergency-almost as serious as war itself--demands. Whatever stands in the way of speed and efficiency in defense preparations must give way to the national need. A free nation has the right to expect full cooperation from all groups. A free nation has the right to look to the leaders of business, of labor, and of agriculture to take the lead in stimulating effort, not among other groups but within their own groups. The best way of dealing with the few slackers or trouble makers in our midst is, first, to shame them by patriotic example, and, if that fails, to use the sovereignty of Government to save Government. As men do not live by bread alone, they do not fight by armaments alone. Those who man our defenses, and those behind them who build our defenses, must have the stamina and the courage which come from unshakable belief in the manner of life which they are defending. The mighty action that we are calling for cannot be based on a disregard of all things worth fighting for. The Nation takes great satisfaction and much strength from the things which have been done to make its people conscious of their individual stake in the preservation of democratic life in America. Those things have toughened the fibre of our people, have renewed their faith and strengthened their devotion to the institutions we make ready to protect. Certainly this is no time for any of us to stop thinking about the social and economic problems which are the root cause of the social revolution which is today a supreme factor in the world. For there is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy. The basic things expected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. They are: Equality of opportunity for youth and for others. Jobs for those who can work. Security for those who need it. The ending of special privilege for the few. The preservation of civil liberties for all. The enjoyment of the fruits of scientific progress in a wider and constantly rising standard of living. These are the simple, basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of our modern world. The inner and abiding strength of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these expectations. Many subjects connected with our social economy call for immediate improvement. As examples: We should bring more citizens under the coverage of old-age pensions and unemployment insurance. We should widen the opportunities for adequate medical care. We should plan a better system by which persons deserving or needing gainful employment may obtain it. I have called for personal sacrifice. I am assured of the willingness of almost all Americans to respond to that call. A part of the sacrifice means the payment of more money in taxes. In my Budget Message I shall recommend that a greater portion of this great defense program be paid for from taxation than we are paying today. No person should try, or be allowed, to get rich out of this program; and the principle of tax payments in accordance with ability to pay should be constantly before our eyes to guide our legislation. If the Congress maintains these principles, the voters, putting patriotism ahead of pocketbooks, will give you their applause. In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world. The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way--everywhere in the world. The third is freedom from want--which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants-everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear--which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world. That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation. That kind of world is the very antithesis of the so-called new order of tyranny which the dictators seek to create with the crash of a bomb. To that new order we oppose the greater conception--the moral order. A good society is able to face schemes of world domination and foreign revolutions alike without fear. Since the beginning of our American history, we have been engaged in change -- in a perpetual peaceful revolution -- a revolution which goes on steadily, quietly adjusting itself to changing conditions--without the concentration camp or the quick-lime in the ditch. The world order which we seek is the cooperation of free countries, working together in a friendly, civilized society. This nation has placed its destiny in the hands and heads and hearts of its millions of free men and women; and its faith in freedom under the guidance of God. Freedom means the supremacy of human rights everywhere. Our support goes to those who struggle to gain those rights or keep them. Our strength is our unity of purpose. To that high concept there can be no end save victory. Nosey girl lol. yes I do have alot of time on my hands. for those of you who have answered thank you. The way I took what he said was less about our personal freedom and more about letting others do our fighting for us. but that's just me.
Baby Gates!! Please Help!!? My daugther is only 22 months old! And is so smart she knows how to work the baby gates...and climb them!! I feel she is still way to young to have free wonder of the house as she is still at that stage of getting into everything! I can't seem to find a way for her to understand the safety measures and why she can't touch things!! I hate to spank but it seems to be the only thing that gets to her! Even though a minute after she finishes crying she's right back at it! She wasn't this bad until 2 weeks ago her sister was born..now it's 10 times worst! I just don't know what to do..as I was an only child my mother never climbed this mountian, so I can't go to her for advice!
Safety with stair rails inside two storey home? my mum has a stair well inside her two storey home and would like to make it safe for her first grandchild. we can get a gate to go at the top of the stairs to stop bub from getting on the stairs that way. but around the stair well mum has railings all around it. a lady and baby visited her a few weeks ago, and that baby CRAWLED THROUGH THE RAILS and if mum hadn't seen baby and DIVED to the floor to grab him, he would have fallen straight through into the stair well. understandably mum is very distressed about this and would like to buy something to make it safe for children in future. any ideas?? they are to standard, we've had two builders inspect them to make sure when the house was built only a few years ago. thank you for the plywood advice, we will definitely look into this.
I have an OH&S question about schools in Australia? My child has just started prep in Vic, Aust and I discovered that they leave all gates open during school hours. I'm very worried about the safety of the kids as any weirdo/murderer even can walk into the school grounds, or the kids can walk straight out! I brought up this topic with the school principal and she said due to OH&S regulations they are not allowed to close or lock the gates. I find this a bit ridiculous as to me there'd be more danger on the kids running out and getting hit by a car for example, or these days with sickos getting into the school and attacking little kids. Does anyone know if this OH&S issue is true and if so who shall I take my concerns to now? Theh principal won't do anything about it.
can an easement be blocked by a gate???? kelly p Member since: August 01, 2006 Total points: 244 (Level 1) Your Open QuestionShow me another » Hello, I would like to know if anyone out there knows if an easement can be blocked by a gate.? we live in massachusetts and our deed states that we have the right to egress, regress and third one that i can not remember. but i know it is go in, come out and go back in again. our new neighbors would like to put 2 gates blocking the driveway to our garage saying it is for the safety of their children. We have an alarm system in the garage and our concern, besides the inconvenience of the gates would be if the alarm went off for the police or fire dept. how would they get down there. The neighbors are thinking of putting very heavy duty gates up and pins in the driveway for the gates to close on. We went through this last year with them and both of our lawyers said it could not be done, but now they want to fight it. I do not think we have the updated deed, their supposedly was a problem with their lawyer not recording things properly when the house was bought, and he had to post a scrivenor's error letter . stating this. I am so upset I hope i am explaining this well, thank you. 2 days ago - 1 day left to answer. Report It

I spoke to management and they said for me to do what I have to do toMy bf wants me to sue them I am a little hesitant because i am shy and dont know how to go about it. But after talking to his grandma- I am want to sue them the correct way. She told me to write them a letter satting everythign that happened and what agreements we made and also point out what they did not follow up on and to only pa half the rent and send a copy of the police report. But now he is calling me a punk saying why do I want to write them a letter- when I think it seems right to do what she said. I had to install window gates and a new door lock to ensure my safety and my unborn child. ANd know he is making me very upset and now I dont know what to do anymore. What should I do? Should I just sue them or send the letter out and sue them?
child stuck with syringe at school..... do you sue? 2 weeks ago my sister calls me in a panic to inform me of a little boy at her sons school who had been stuck with a syringe in the playground. the boy is in the third grade and they still dont know if any disease has been caught. the kicker is the school is just feet away froma public park and the school had actually put a fence in for safety. what they didnt do is put up the locked gate and instead of the gate there was an open hole. my question is this what would you do if it was your child? do you sue in case of long term medical bills from an impending infection? if so who do you sue the city park for not patroling security better, the school board for there good idea of safety gone bad, the teacher who was not monitoring the childeren or the grounds keeper who should be doing a thourough cleaning of the playground everyday. could it have been prevented if say the school board implemented a metal detector cleaning every morniing

Should I just sue them or send the letter out and sue them? My compuer was stolen which was about $1500 some money, dvd's, and a cable modem. The window gates and new lock for the door cost $800. I realized that when you lock the window you can still pull the top window down from the outside of the window. The fire escape is easily accesible from the ground. The super has a copy of the key and was fingered by majority of tenants in the building to be known for going into people apartments and stealing from them. I being pregnant at the time had to do what was necessary to ensure my safety and my unborn child at the time. Now the landlords sent us a bill saying we owe $1470 when infact it should be $670. I have rental assistance which sent them 2 checks in october of about $400 together minus my 950 rent deducting my $800 window gate and lock.
Poll: Did you like The Oddysey or The Iliad better? I liked the Iliad better. This was my favorite part: Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans. Many a brave soul did it send hurrying down to Hades, and many a hero did it yield a prey to dogs and vultures, for so were the counsels of Jove fulfilled from the day on which the son of Atreus, king of men, and great Achilles, first fell out with one another. And which of the gods was it that set them on to quarrel? It was the son of Jove and Leto; for he was angry with the king and sent a pestilence upon the host to plague the people, because the son of Atreus had dishonoured Chryses his priest. Now Chryses had come to the ships of the Achaeans to free his daughter, and had brought with him a great ransom: moreover he bore in his hand the sceptre of Apollo wreathed with a suppliant's wreath and he besought the Achaeans, but most of all the two sons of Atreus, who were their chiefs. "Sons of Atreus," he cried, "and all other Achaeans, may the gods who dwell in Olympus grant you to sack the city of Priam, and to reach your homes in safety; but free my daughter, and accept a ransom for her, in reverence to Apollo, son of Jove." On this the rest of the Achaeans with one voice were for respecting the priest and taking the ransom that he offered; but not so Agamemnon, who spoke fiercely to him and sent him roughly away. "Old man," said he, "let me not find you tarrying about our ships, nor yet coming hereafter. Your sceptre of the god and your wreath shall profit you nothing. I will not free her. She shall grow old in my house at Argos far from her own home, busying herself with her loom and visiting my couch; so go, and do not provoke me or it shall be the worse for you." The old man feared him and obeyed. Not a word he spoke, but went by the shore of the sounding sea and prayed apart to King Apollo whom lovely Leto had borne. "Hear me," he cried, "O god of the silver bow, that protectest Chryse and holy Cilla and rulest Tenedos with thy might, hear me oh thou of Sminthe. If I have ever decked your temple with garlands, or burned your thigh-bones in fat of bulls or goats, grant my prayer, and let your arrows avenge these my tears upon the Danaans." Thus did he pray, and Apollo heard his prayer. He came down furious from the summits of Olympus, with his bow and his quiver upon his shoulder, and the arrows rattled on his back with the rage that trembled within him. He sat himself down away from the ships with a face as dark as night, and his silver bow rang death as he shot his arrow in the midst of them. First he smote their mules and their hounds, but presently he aimed his shafts at the people themselves, and all day long the pyres of the dead were burning. For nine whole days he shot his arrows among the people, but upon the tenth day Achilles called them in assembly- moved thereto by Juno, who saw the Achaeans in their death-throes and had compassion upon them. Then, when they were got together, he rose and spoke among them. "Son of Atreus," said he, "I deem that we should now turn roving home if we would escape destruction, for we are being cut down by war and pestilence at once. Let us ask some priest or prophet, or some reader of dreams (for dreams, too, are of Jove) who can tell us why Phoebus Apollo is so angry, and say whether it is for some vow that we have broken, or hecatomb that we have not offered, and whether he will accept the savour of lambs and goats without blemish, so as to take away the plague from us." With these words he sat down, and Calchas son of Thestor, wisest of augurs, who knew things past present and to come, rose to speak. He it was who had guided the Achaeans with their fleet to Ilius, through the prophesyings with which Phoebus Apollo had inspired him. With all sincerity and goodwill he addressed them thus:- "Achilles, loved of heaven, you bid me tell you about the anger of King Apollo, I will therefore do so; but consider first and swear that you will stand by me heartily in word and deed, for I know that I shall offend one who rules the Argives with might, to whom all the Achaeans are in subjection. A plain man cannot stand against the anger of a king, who if he swallow his displeasure now, will yet nurse revenge till he has wreaked it. Consider, therefore, whether or no you will protect me." And Achilles answered, "Fear not, but speak as it is borne in upon you from heaven, for by Apollo, Calchas, to whom you pray, and whose oracles you reveal to us, not a Danaan at our ships shall lay his hand upon you, while I yet live to look upon the face of the earth- no, not though you name Agamemnon himself, who is by far the foremost of the Achaeans." Thereon the seer spoke boldly. "The god," he said, "is angry neither about vow nor hecatomb, but for his priest's sake, whom Agamemnon has dishonoured, in that he would not free his daughter nor take a ransom for her; therefore has he sent these evils upon us, and will yet send others. He will not deliver the Danaans from this pestilence till Agamemnon has restored the girl without fee or ransom to her father, and has sent a holy hecatomb to Chryse. Thus we may perhaps appease him." With these words he sat down, and Agamemnon rose in anger. His heart was black with rage, and his eyes flashed fire as he scowled on Calchas and said, "Seer of evil, you never yet prophesied smooth things concerning me, but have ever loved to foretell that which was evil. You have brought me neither comfort nor performance; and now you come seeing among Danaans, and saying that Apollo has plagued us because I would not take a ransom for this girl, the daughter of Chryses. I have set my heart on keeping her in my own house, for I love her better even than my own wife Clytemnestra, whose peer she is alike in form and feature, in understanding and accomplishments. Still I will give her up if I must, for I would have the people live, not die; but you must find me a prize instead, or I alone among the Argives shall be without one. This is not well; for you behold, all of you, that my prize is to go elsewhither." And Achilles answered, "Most noble son of Atreus, covetous beyond all mankind, how shall the Achaeans find you another prize? We have no common store from which to take one. Those we took from the cities have been awarded; we cannot disallow the awards that have been made already. Give this girl, therefore, to the god, and if ever Jove grants us to sack the city of Troy we will requite you three and fourfold." Then Agamemnon said, "Achilles, valiant though you be, you shall not thus outwit me. You shall not overreach and you shall not persuade me. Are you to keep your own prize, while I sit tamely under my loss and give up the girl at your bidding? Let the Achaeans find me a prize in fair exchange to my liking, or I will come and take your own, or that of Ajax or of Ulysses; and he to whomsoever I may come shall rue my coming. But of this we will take thought hereafter; for the present, let us draw a ship into the sea, and find a crew for her expressly; let us put a hecatomb on board, and let us send Chryseis also; further, let some chief man among us be in command, either Ajax, or Idomeneus, or yourself, son of Peleus, mighty warrior that you are, that we may offer sacrifice and appease the the anger of the god." Achilles scowled at him and answered, "You are steeped in insolence and lust of gain. With what heart can any of the Achaeans do your bidding, either on foray or in open fighting? I came not warring here for any ill the Trojans had done me. I have no quarrel with them. They have not raided my cattle nor my horses, nor cut down my harvests on the rich plains of Phthia; for between me and them there is a great space, both mountain and sounding sea. We have followed you, Sir Insolence! for your pleasure, not ours- to gain satisfaction from the Trojans for your shameless self and for Menelaus. You forget this, and threaten to rob me of the prize for which I have toiled, and which the sons of the Achaeans have given me. Never when the Achaeans sack any rich city of the Trojans do I receive so good a prize as you do, though it is my hands that do the better part of the fighting. When the sharing comes, your share is far the largest, and I, forsooth, must go back to my ships, take what I can get and be thankful, when my labour of fighting is done. Now, therefore, I shall go back to Phthia; it will be much better for me to return home with my ships, for I will not stay here dishonoured to gather gold and substance for you." And Agamemnon answered, "Fly if you will, I shall make you no prayers to stay you. I have others here who will do me honour, and above all Jove, the lord of counsel. There is no king here so hateful to me as you are, for you are ever quarrelsome and ill affected. What though you be brave? Was it not heaven that made you so? Go home, then, with your ships and comrades to lord it over the Myrmidons. I care neither for you nor for your anger; and thus will I do: since Phoebus Apollo is taking Chryseis from me, I shall send her with my ship and my followers, but I shall come to your tent and take your own prize Briseis, that you may learn how much stronger I am than you are, and that another may fear to set himself up as equal or comparable with me." The son of Peleus was furious, and his heart within his shaggy breast was divided whether to draw his sword, push the others aside, and kill the son of Atreus, or to restrain himself and check his anger. While he was thus in two minds, and was drawing his mighty sword from its scabbard, Minerva came down from heaven (for Juno had sent her in the love she bore to them both), and seized the son of Peleus by his yellow hair, visible to him alone, for of the others no man could see her. Achilles turned in amaze, and by the fire that flashed from her eyes at once knew that she was Minerva. "Why are you here," said he, "daughter of aegis-bearing Jove? To see the pride of Agamemnon, son of Atreus? Let me tell you- and it shall surely be- he shall pay for this insolence with his life." And Minerva said, "I come from heaven, if you will hear me, to bid you stay your anger. Juno has sent me, who cares for both of you alike. Cease, then, this brawling, and do not draw your sword; rail at him if you will, and your railing will not be vain, for I tell you- and it shall surely be- that you shall hereafter receive gifts three times as splendid by reason of this present insult. Hold, therefore, and obey." "Goddess," answered Achilles, "however angry a man may be, he must do as you two command him. This will be best, for the gods ever hear the prayers of him who has obeyed them." He stayed his hand on the silver hilt of his sword, and thrust it back into the scabbard as Minerva bade him. Then she went back to Olympus among the other gods, and to the house of aegis-bearing Jove. But the son of Peleus again began railing at the son of Atreus, for he was still in a rage. "Wine-bibber," he cried, "with the face of a dog and the heart of a hind, you never dare to go out with the host in fight, nor yet with our chosen men in ambuscade. You shun this as you do death itself. You had rather go round and rob his prizes from any man who contradicts you. You devour your people, for you are king over a feeble folk; otherwise, son of Atreus, henceforward you would insult no man. Therefore I say, and swear it with a great oath- nay, by this my sceptre which shalt sprout neither leaf nor shoot, nor bud anew from the day on which it left its parent stem upon the mountains- for the axe stripped it of leaf and bark, and now the sons of the Achaeans bear it as judges and guardians of the decrees of heaven- so surely and solemnly do I swear that hereafter they shall look fondly for Achilles and shall not find him. In the day of your distress, when your men fall dying by the murderous hand of Hector, you shall not know how to help them, and shall rend your heart with rage for the hour when you offered insult to the bravest of the Achaeans." With this the son of Peleus dashed his gold-bestudded sceptre on the ground and took his seat, while the son of Atreus was beginning fiercely from his place upon the other side. Then uprose smooth-tongued Nestor, the facile speaker of the Pylians, and the words fell from his lips sweeter than honey. Two generations of men born and bred in Pylos had passed away under his rule, and he was now reigning over the third. With all sincerity and goodwill, therefore, he addressed them thus:- "Of a truth," he said, "a great sorrow has befallen the Achaean land. Surely Priam with his sons would rejoice, and the Trojans be glad at heart if they could hear this quarrel between you two, who are so excellent in fight and counsel. I am older than either of you; therefore be guided by me. Moreover I have been the familiar friend of men even greater than you are, and they did not disregard my counsels. Never again can I behold such men as Pirithous and Dryas shepherd of his people, or as Caeneus, Exadius, godlike Polyphemus, and Theseus son of Aegeus, peer of the immortals. These were the mightiest men ever born upon this earth: mightiest were they, and when they fought the fiercest tribes of mountain savages they utterly overthrew them. I came from distant Pylos, and went about among them, for they would have me come, and I fought as it was in me to do. Not a man now living could withstand them, but they heard my words, and were persuaded by them. So be it also with yourselves, for this is the more excellent way. Therefore, Agamemnon, though you be strong, take not this girl away, for the sons of the Achaeans have already given her to Achilles; and you, Achilles, strive not further with the king, for no man who by the grace of Jove wields a sceptre has like honour with Agamemnon. You are strong, and have a goddess for your mother; but Agamemnon is stronger than you, for he has more people under him. Son of Atreus, check your anger, I implore you; end this quarrel with Achilles, who in the day of battle is a tower of strength to the Achaeans." And Agamemnon answered, "Sir, all that you have said is true, but this fellow must needs become our lord and master: he must be lord of all, king of all, and captain of all, and this shall hardly be. Granted that the gods have made him a great warrior, have they also given him the right to speak with railing?" Achilles interrupted him. "I should be a mean coward," he cried, "were I to give in to you in all things. Order other people about, not me, for I shall obey no longer. Furthermore I say- and lay my saying to your heart- I shall fight neither you nor any man about this girl, for those that take were those also that gave. But of all else that is at my ship you shall carry away nothing by force. Try, that others may see; if you do, my spear shall be reddened with your blood." When they had quarrelled thus angrily, they rose, and broke up the assembly at the ships of the Achaeans. The son of Peleus went back to his tents and ships with the son of Menoetius and his company, while Agamemnon drew a vessel into the water and chose a crew of twenty oarsmen. He escorted Chryseis on board and sent moreover a hecatomb for the god. And Ulysses went as captain. These, then, went on board and sailed their ways over the sea. But the son of Atreus bade the people purify themselves; so they purified themselves and cast their filth into the sea. Then they offered hecatombs of bulls and goats without blemish on the sea-shore, and the smoke with the savour of their sacrifice rose curling up towards heaven. Thus did they busy themselves throughout the host. But Agamemnon did not forget the threat that he had made Achilles, and called his trusty messengers and squires Talthybius and Eurybates. "Go," said he, "to the tent of Achilles, son of Peleus; take Briseis by the hand and bring her hither; if he will not give her I shall come with others and take her- which will press him harder." He charged them straightly further and dismissed them, whereon they went their way sorrowfully by the seaside, till they came to the tents and ships of the Myrmidons. They found Achilles sitting by his tent and his ships, and ill-pleased he was when he beheld them. They stood fearfully and reverently before him, and never a word did they speak, but he knew them and said, "Welcome, heralds, messengers of gods and men; draw near; my quarrel is not with you but with Agamemnon who has sent you for the girl Briseis. Therefore, Patroclus, bring her and give her to them, but let them be witnesses by the blessed gods, by mortal men, and by the fierceness of Agamemnon's anger, that if ever again there be need of me to save the people from ruin, they shall seek and they shall not find. Agamemnon is mad with rage and knows not how to look before and after that the Achaeans may fight by their ships in safety." Patroclus did as his dear comrade had bidden him. He brought Briseis from the tent and gave her over to the heralds, who took her with them to the ships of the Achaeans- and the woman was loth to go. Then Achilles went all alone by the side of the hoar sea, weeping and looking out upon the boundless waste of waters. He raised his hands in prayer to his immortal mother, "Mother," he cried, "you bore me doomed to live but for a little season; surely Jove, who thunders from Olympus, might have made that little glorious. It is not so. Agamemnon, son of Atreus, has done me dishonour, and has robbed me of my prize by force." As he spoke he wept aloud, and his mother heard him where she was sitting in the depths of the sea hard by the old man her father. Forthwith she rose as it were a grey mist out of the waves, sat down before him as he stood weeping, caressed him with her hand, and said, "My son, why are you weeping? What is it that grieves you? Keep it not from me, but tell me, that we may know it together." Achilles drew a deep sigh and said, "You know it; why tell you what you know well already? We went to Thebe the strong city of Eetion, sacked it, and brought hither the spoil. The sons of the Achaeans shared it duly among themselves, and chose lovely Chryseis as the meed of Agamemnon; but Chryses, priest of Apollo, came to the ships of the Achaeans to free his daughter, and brought with him a great ransom: moreover he bore in his hand the sceptre of Apollo, wreathed with a suppliant's wreath, and he besought the Achaeans, but most of all the two sons of Atreus who were their chiefs. "On this the rest of the Achaeans with one voice were for respecting the priest and taking the ransom that he offered; but not so Agamemnon, who spoke fiercely to him and sent him roughly away. So he went back in anger, and Apollo, who loved him dearly, heard his prayer. Then the god sent a deadly dart upon the Argives, and the people died thick on one another, for the arrows went everywhither among the wide host of the Achaeans. At last a seer in the fulness of his knowledge declared to us the oracles of Apollo, and I was myself first to say that we should appease him. Whereon the son of Atreus rose in anger, and threatened that which he has since done. The Achaeans are now taking the girl in a ship to Chryse, and sending gifts of sacrifice to the god; but the heralds have just taken from my tent the daughter of Briseus, whom the Achaeans had awarded to myself. "Help your brave son, therefore, if you are able. Go to Olympus, and if you have ever done him service in word or deed, implore the aid of Jove. Ofttimes in my father's house have I heard you glory in that you alone of the immortals saved the son of Saturn from ruin, when the others, with Juno, Neptune, and Pallas Minerva would have put him in bonds. It was you, goddess, who delivered him by calling to Olympus the hundred-handed monster whom gods call Briareus, but men Aegaeon, for he is stronger even than his father; when therefore he took his seat all-glorious beside the son of Saturn, the other gods were afraid, and did not bind him. Go, then, to him, remind him of all this, clasp his knees, and bid him give succour to the Trojans. Let the Achaeans be hemmed in at the sterns of their ships, and perish on the sea-shore, that they may reap what joy they may of their king, and that Agamemnon may rue his blindness in offering insult to the foremost of the Achaeans." Thetis wept and answered, "My son, woe is me that I should have borne or suckled you. Would indeed that you had lived your span free from all sorrow at your ships, for it is all too brief; alas, that you should be at once short of life and long of sorrow above your peers: woe, therefore, was the hour in which I bore you; nevertheless I will go to the snowy heights of Olympus, and tell this tale to Jove, if he will hear our prayer: meanwhile stay where you are with your ships, nurse your anger against the Achaeans, and hold aloof from fight. For Jove went yesterday to Oceanus, to a feast among the Ethiopians, and the other gods went with him. He will return to Olympus twelve days hence; I will then go to his mansion paved with bronze and will beseech him; nor do I doubt that I shall be able to persuade him." On this she left him, still furious at the loss of her that had been taken from him. Meanwhile Ulysses reached Chryse with the hecatomb. When they had come inside the harbour they furled the sails and laid them in the ship's hold; they slackened the forestays, lowered the mast into its place, and rowed the ship to the place where they would have her lie; there they cast out their mooring-stones and made fast the hawsers. They then got out upon the sea-shore and landed the hecatomb for Apollo; Chryseis also left the ship, and Ulysses led her to the altar to deliver her into the hands of her father. "Chryses," said he, "King Agamemnon has sent me to bring you back your child, and to offer sacrifice to Apollo on behalf of the Danaans, that we may propitiate the god, who has now brought sorrow upon the Argives." So saying he gave the girl over to her father, who received her gladly, and they ranged the holy hecatomb all orderly round the altar of the god. They washed their hands and took up the barley-meal to sprinkle over the victims, while Chryses lifted up his hands and prayed aloud on their behalf. "Hear me," he cried, "O god of the silver bow, that protectest Chryse and holy Cilla, and rulest Tenedos with thy might. Even as thou didst hear me aforetime when I prayed, and didst press hardly upon the Achaeans, so hear me yet again, and stay this fearful pestilence from the Danaans." Thus did he pray, and Apollo heard his prayer. When they had done praying and sprinkling the barley-meal, they drew back the heads of the victims and killed and flayed them. They cut out the thigh-bones, wrapped them round in two layers of fat, set some pieces of raw meat on the top of them, and then Chryses laid them on the wood fire and poured wine over them, while the young men stood near him with five-pronged spits in their hands. When the thigh-bones were burned and they had tasted the inward meats, they cut the rest up small, put the pieces upon the spits, roasted them till they were done, and drew them off: then, when they had finished their work and the feast was ready, they ate it, and every man had his full share, so that all were satisfied. As soon as they had had enough to eat and drink, pages filled the mixing-bowl with wine and water and handed it round, after giving every man his drink-offering. Thus all day long the young men worshipped the god with song, hymning him and chaunting the joyous paean, and the god took pleasure in their voices; but when the sun went down, and it came on dark, they laid themselves down to sleep by the stern cables of the ship, and when the child of morning, rosy-fingered Dawn, appeared they again set sail for the host of the Achaeans. Apollo sent them a fair wind, so they raised their mast and hoisted their white sails aloft. As the sail bellied with the wind the ship flew through the deep blue water, and the foam hissed against her bows as she sped onward. When they reached the wide-stretching host of the Achaeans, they drew the vessel ashore, high and dry upon the sands, set her strong props beneath her, and went their ways to their own tents and ships. But Achilles abode at his ships and nursed his anger. He went not to the honourable assembly, and sallied not forth to fight, but gnawed at his own heart, pining for battle and the war-cry. Now after twelve days the immortal gods came back in a body to Olympus, and Jove led the way. Thetis was not unmindful of the charge her son had laid upon her, so she rose from under the sea and went through great heaven with early morning to Olympus, where she found the mighty son of Saturn sitting all alone upon its topmost ridges. She sat herself down before him, and with her left hand seized his knees, while with her right she caught him under the chin, and besought him, saying- "Father Jove, if I ever did you service in word or deed among the immortals, hear my prayer, and do honour to my son, whose life is to be cut short so early. King Agamemnon has dishonoured him by taking his prize and keeping her. Honour him then yourself, Olympian lord of counsel, and grant victory to the Trojans, till the Achaeans give my son his due and load him with riches in requital." Jove sat for a while silent, and without a word, but Thetis still kept firm hold of his knees, and besought him a second time. "Incline your head," said she, "and promise me surely, or else deny me- for you have nothing to fear- that I may learn how greatly you disdain me." At this Jove was much troubled and answered, "I shall have trouble if you set me quarrelling with Juno, for she will provoke me with her taunting speeches; even now she is always railing at me before the other gods and accusing me of giving aid to the Trojans. Go back now, lest she should find out. I will consider the matter, and will bring it about as wish. See, I incline my head that you believe me. This is the most solemn that I can give to any god. I never recall my word, or deceive, or fail to do what I say, when I have nodded my head." As he spoke the son of Saturn bowed his dark brows, and the ambrosial locks swayed on his immortal head, till vast Olympus reeled. When the pair had thus laid their plans, they parted- Jove to his house, while the goddess quitted the splendour of Olympus, and plunged into the depths of the sea. The gods rose from their seats, before the coming of their sire. Not one of them dared to remain sitting, but all stood up as he came among them. There, then, he took his seat. But Juno, when she saw him, knew that he and the old merman's daughter, silver-footed Thetis, had been hatching mischief, so she at once began to upbraid him. "Trickster," she cried, "which of the gods have you been taking into your counsels now? You are always settling matters in secret behind my back, and have never yet told me, if you could help it, one word of your intentions." "Juno," replied the sire of gods and men, "you must not expect to be informed of all my counsels. You are my wife, but you would find it hard to understand them. When it is proper for you to hear, there is no one, god or man, who will be told sooner, but when I mean to keep a matter to myself, you must not pry nor ask questions." "Dread son of Saturn," answered Juno, "what are you talking about? I? Pry and ask questions? Never. I let you have your own way in everything. Still, I have a strong misgiving that the old merman's daughter Thetis has been talking you over, for she was with you and had hold of your knees this self-same morning. I believe, therefore, that you have been promising her to give glory to Achilles, and to kill much people at the ships of the Achaeans." "Wife," said Jove, "I can do nothing but you suspect me and find it out. You will take nothing by it, for I shall only dislike you the more, and it will go harder with you. Granted that it is as you say; I mean to have it so; sit down and hold your tongue as I bid you for if I once begin to lay my hands about you, though all heaven were on your side it would profit you nothing." On this Juno was frightened, so she curbed her stubborn will and sat down in silence. But the heavenly beings were disquieted throughout the house of Jove, till the cunning workman Vulcan began to try and pacify his mother Juno. "It will be intolerable," said he, "if you two fall to wrangling and setting heaven in an uproar about a pack of mortals. If such ill counsels are to prevail, we shall have no pleasure at our banquet. Let me then advise my mother- and she must herself know that it will be better- to make friends with my dear father Jove, lest he again scold her and disturb our feast. If the Olympian Thunderer wants to hurl us all from our seats, he can do so, for he is far the strongest, so give him fair words, and he will then soon be in a good humour with us." As he spoke, he took a double cup of nectar, and placed it in his mother's hand. "Cheer up, my dear mother," said he, "and make the best of it. I love you dearly, and should be very sorry to see you get a thrashing; however grieved I might be, I could not help for there is no standing against Jove. Once before when I was trying to help you, he caught me by the foot and flung me from the heavenly threshold. All day long from morn till eve, was I falling, till at sunset I came to ground in the island of Lemnos, and there I lay, with very little life left in me, till the Sintians came and tended me." Juno smiled at this, and as she smiled she took the cup from her son's hands. Then Vulcan drew sweet nectar from the mixing-bowl, and served it round among the gods, going from left to right; and the blessed gods laughed out a loud applause as they saw him ing bustling about the heavenly mansion. Thus through the livelong day to the going down of the sun they feasted, and every one had his full share, so that all were satisfied. Apollo struck his lyre, and the Muses lifted up their sweet voices, calling and answering one another. But when the sun's glorious light had faded, they went home to bed, each in his own abode, which lame Vulcan with his consummate skill had fashioned for them. So Jove, the Olympian Lord of Thunder, hied him to the bed in which he always slept; and when he had got on to it he went to sleep, with Juno of the golden throne by his side. Now the other gods and the armed warriors on the plain slept soundly, but Jove was wakeful, for he was thinking how to do honour to Achilles, and destroyed much people at the ships of the Achaeans. In the end he deemed it would be best to send a lying dream to King Agamemnon; so he called one to him and said to it, "Lying Dream, go to the ships of the Achaeans, into the tent of Agamemnon, and say to him word to word as I now bid you. Tell him to get the Achaeans instantly under arms, for he shall take Troy. There are no longer divided counsels among the gods; Juno has brought them to her own mind, and woe betides the Trojans." The dream went when it had heard its message, and soon reached the ships of the Achaeans. It sought Agamemnon son of Atreus and found him in his tent, wrapped in a profound slumber. It hovered over his head in the likeness of Nestor, son of Neleus, whom Agamemnon honoured above all his councillors, and said:- "You are sleeping, son of Atreus; one who has the welfare of his host and so much other care upon his shoulders should dock his sleep. Hear me at once, for I come as a messenger from Jove, who, though he be not near, yet takes thought for you and pities you. He bids you get the Achaeans instantly under arms, for you shall take Troy. There are no longer divided counsels among the gods; Juno has brought them over to her own mind, and woe betides the Trojans at the hands of Jove. Remember this, and when you wake see that it does not escape you." The dream then left him, and he thought of things that were, surely not to be accomplished. He thought that on that same day he was to take the city of Priam, but he little knew what was in the mind of Jove, who had many another hard-fought fight in store alike for Danaans and Trojans. Then presently he woke, with the divine message still ringing in his ears; so he sat upright, and put on his soft shirt so fair and new, and over this his heavy cloak. He bound his sandals on to his comely feet, and slung his silver-studded sword about his shoulders; then he took the imperishable staff of his father, and sallied forth to the ships of the Achaeans. The goddess Dawn now wended her way to vast Olympus that she might herald day to Jove and to the other immortals, and Agamemnon sent the criers round to call the people in assembly; so they called them and the people gathered thereon. But first he summoned a meeting of the elders at the ship of Nestor king of Pylos, and when they were assembled he laid a cunning counsel before them. "My friends," said he, "I have had a dream from heaven in the dead of night, and its face and figure resembled none but Nestor's. It hovered over my head and said, 'You are sleeping, son of Atreus; one who has the welfare of his host and so much other care upon his shoulders should dock his sleep. Hear me at once, for I am a messenger from Jove, who, though he be not near, yet takes thought for you and pities you. He bids you get the Achaeans instantly under arms, for you shall take Troy. There are no longer divided counsels among the gods; Juno has brought them over to her own mind, and woe betides the Trojans at the hands of Jove. Remember this.' The dream then vanished and I awoke. Let us now, therefore, arm the sons of the Achaeans. But it will be well that I should first sound them, and to this end I will tell them to fly with their ships; but do you others go about among the host and prevent their doing so." He then sat down, and Nestor the prince of Pylos with all sincerity and goodwill addressed them thus: "My friends," said he, "princes and councillors of the Argives, if any other man of the Achaeans had told us of this dream we should have declared it false, and would have had nothing to do with it. But he who has seen it is the foremost man among us; we must therefore set about getting the people under arms." With this he led the way from the assembly, and the other sceptred kings rose with him in obedience to the word of Agamemnon; but the people pressed forward to hear. They swarmed like bees that sally from some hollow cave and flit in countless throng among the spring flowers, bunched in knots and clusters; even so did the mighty multitude pour from ships and tents to the assembly, and range themselves upon the wide-watered shore, while among them ran Wildfire Rumour, messenger of Jove, urging them ever to the fore. Thus they gathered in a pell-mell of mad confusion, and the earth groaned under the tramp of men as the people sought their places. Nine heralds went crying about among them to stay their tumult and bid them listen to the kings, till at last they were got into their several places and ceased their clamour. Then King Agamemnon rose, holding his sceptre. This was the work of Vulcan, who gave it to Jove the son of Saturn. Jove gave it to Mercury, slayer of Argus, guide and guardian. King Mercury gave it to Pelops, the mighty charioteer, and Pelops to Atreus, shepherd of his people. Atreus, when he died, left it to Thyestes, rich in flocks, and Thyestes in his turn left it to be borne by Agamemnon, that he might be lord of all Argos and of the isles. Leaning, then, on his sceptre, he addressed the Argives. "My friends," he said, "heroes, servants of Mars, the hand of heaven has been laid heavily upon me. Cruel Jove gave me his solemn promise that I should sack the city of Priam before returning, but he has played me false, and is now bidding me go ingloriously back to Argos with the loss of much people. Such is the will of Jove, who has laid many a proud city in the dust, as he will yet lay others, for his power is above all. It will be a sorry tale hereafter that an Achaean host, at once so great and valiant, battled in vain against men fewer in number than themselves; but as yet the end is not in sight. Think that the Achaeans and Trojans have sworn to a solemn covenant, and that they have each been numbered- the Trojans by the roll of their householders, and we by companies of ten; think further that each of our companies desired to have a Trojan householder to pour out their wine; we are so greatly more in number that full many a company would have to go without its cup-bearer. But they have in the town allies from other places, and it is these that hinder me from being able to sack the rich city of Ilius. Nine of Jove years are gone; the timbers of our ships have rotted; their tackling is sound no longer. Our wives and little ones at home look anxiously for our coming, but the work that we came hither to do has not been done. Now, therefore, let us all do as I say: let us sail back to our own land, for we shall not take Troy." With these words he moved the hearts of the multitude, so many of them as knew not the cunning counsel of Agamemnon. They surged to and fro like the waves of the Icarian Sea, when the east and south winds break from heaven's clouds to lash them; or as when the west wind sweeps over a field of corn and the ears bow beneath the blast, even so were they swayed as they flew with loud cries towards the ships, and the dust from under their feet rose heavenward. They cheered each other on to draw the ships into the sea; they cleared the channels in front of them; they began taking away the stays from underneath them, and the welkin rang with their glad cries, so eager were they to return. Then surely the Argives would have returned after a fashion that was not fated. But Juno said to Minerva, "Alas, daughter of aegis-bearing Jove, unweariable, shall the Argives fly home to their own land over the broad sea, and leave Priam and the Trojans the glory of still keeping Helen, for whose sake so many of the Achaeans have died at Troy, far from their homes? Go about at once among the host, and speak fairly to them, man by man, that they draw not their ships into the sea." Minerva was not slack to do her bidding. Down she darted from the topmost summits of Olympus, and in a moment she was at the ships of the Achaeans. There she found Ulysses, peer of Jove in counsel, standing alone. He had not as yet laid a hand upon his ship, for he was grieved and sorry; so she went close up to him and said, "Ulysses, noble son of Laertes, are you going to fling yourselves into your ships and be off home to your own land in this way? Will you leave Priam and the Trojans the glory of still keeping Helen, for whose sake so many of the Achaeans have died at Troy, far from their homes? Go about at once among the host, and speak fairly to them, man by man, that they draw not their ships into the sea." Ulysses knew the voice as that of the goddess: he flung his cloak from him and set off to run. His servant Eurybates, a man of Ithaca, who waited on him, took charge of the cloak, whereon Ulysses went straight up to Agamemnon and received from him his ancestral, imperishable staff. With this he went about among the ships of the Achaeans. Whenever he met a king or chieftain, he stood by him and spoke him fairly. "Sir," said he, "this flight is cowardly and unworthy. Stand to your post, and bid your people also keep their places. You do not yet know the full mind of Agamemnon; he was sounding us, and ere long will visit the Achaeans with his displeasure. We were not all of us at the council to hear what he then said; see to it lest he be angry and do us a mischief; for the pride of kings is great, and the hand of Jove is with them." But when he came across any common man who was making a noise, he struck him with his staff and rebuked him, saying, "Sirrah, hold your peace, and listen to better men than yourself. You are a coward and no soldier; you are nobody either in fight or council; we cannot all be kings; it is not well that there should be many masters; one man must be supreme- one king to whom the son of scheming Saturn has given the sceptre of sovereignty over you all." Thus masterfully did he go about among the host, and the people hurried back to the council from their tents and ships with a sound as the thunder of surf when it comes crashing down upon the shore, and all the sea is in an uproar. The rest now took their seats and kept to their own several places, but Thersites still went on wagging his unbridled tongue- a man of many words, and those unseemly; a monger of sedition, a railer against all who were in authority, who cared not what he said, so that he might set the Achaeans in a laugh. He was the ugliest man of all those that came before Troy- bandy-legged, lame of one foot, with his two shoulders rounded and hunched over his chest. His head ran up to a point, but there was little hair on the top of it. Achilles and Ulysses hated him worst of all, for it was with them that he was most wont to wrangle; now, however, with a shrill squeaky voice he began heaping his abuse on Agamemnon. The Achaeans were angry and disgusted, yet none the less he kept on brawling and bawling at the son of Atreus. "Agamemnon," he cried, "what ails you now, and what more do you want? Your tents are filled with bronze and with fair women, for whenever we take a town we give you the pick of them. Would you have yet more gold, which some Trojan is to give you as a ransom for his son, when I or another Achaean has taken him prisoner? or is it some young girl to hide and lie with? It is not well that you, the ruler of the Achaeans, should bring them into such misery. Weakling cowards, women rather than men, let us sail home, and leave this fellow here at Troy to stew in his own meeds of honour, and discover whether we were of any service to him or no. Achilles is a much better man than he is, and see how he has treated him- robbing him of his prize and keeping it himself. Achilles takes it meekly and shows no fight; if he did, son of Atreus, you would never again insult him." Thus railed Thersites, but Ulysses at once went up to him and rebuked him sternly. "Check your glib tongue, Thersites," said be, "and babble not a word further. Chide not with princes when you have none to back you. There is no viler creature come before Troy with the sons of Atreus. Drop this chatter about kings, and neither revile them nor keep harping about going home. We do not yet know how things are going to be, nor whether the Achaeans are to return with good success or evil. How dare you gibe at Agamemnon because the Danaans have awarded him so many prizes? I tell you, therefore- and it shall surely be- that if I again catch you talking such nonsense, I will either forfeit my own head and be no more called father of Telemachus, or I will take you, strip you stark naked, and whip you out of the assembly till you go blubbering back to the ships." On this he beat him with his staff about the back and shoulders till he dropped and fell a-weeping. The golden sceptre raised a bloody weal on his back, so he sat down frightened and in pain, looking foolish as he wiped the tears from his eyes. The people were sorry for him, yet they laughed heartily, and one would turn to his neighbour saying, "Ulysses has done many a good thing ere now in fight and council, but he never did the Argives a better turn than when he stopped this fellow's mouth from prating further. He will give the kings no more of his insolence." Thus said the people. Then Ulysses rose, sceptre in hand, and Minerva in the likeness of a herald bade the people be still, that those who were far off might hear him and consider his council. He therefore with all sincerity and goodwill addressed them thus:- "King Agamemnon, the Achaeans are for making you a by-word among all mankind. They forget the promise they made you when they set out from Argos, that you should not return till you had sacked the town of Troy, and, like children or widowed women, they murmur and would set off homeward. True it is that they have had toil enough to be disheartened. A man chafes at having to stay away from his wife even for a single month, when he is on shipboard, at the mercy of wind and sea, but it is now nine long years that we have been kept here; I cannot, therefore, blame the Achaeans if they turn restive; still we shall be shamed if we go home empty after so long a stay- therefore, my friends, be patient yet a little longer that we may learn whether the prophesyings of Calchas were false or true. "All who have not since perished must remember as though it were yesterday or the day before, how the ships of the Achaeans were detained in Aulis when we were on our way hither to make war on Priam and the Trojans. We were ranged round about a fountain offering hecatombs to the gods upon their holy altars, and there was a fine plane-tree from beneath which there welled a stream of pure water. Then we saw a prodigy; for Jove sent a fearful serpent out of the ground, with blood-red stains upon its back, and it darted from under the altar on to the plane-tree. Now there was a brood of young sparrows, quite small, upon the topmost bough, peeping out from under the leaves, eight in all, and their mother that hatched them made nine. The serpent ate the poor cheeping things, while the old bird flew about lamenting her little ones; but the serpent threw his coils about her and caught her by the wing as she was screaming. Then, when he had eaten both the sparrow and her young, the god who had sent him made him become a sign; for the son of scheming Saturn turned him into stone, and we stood there wondering at that which had come to pass. Seeing, then, that such a fearful portent had broken in upon our hecatombs, Calchas forthwith declared to us the oracles of heaven. 'Why, Achaeans,' said he, 'are you thus speechless? Jove has sent us this sign, long in coming, and long ere it be fulfilled, though its fame shall last for ever. As the serpent ate the eight fledglings and the sparrow that hatched them, which makes nine, so shall we fight nine years at Troy, but in the tenth shall take the town.' This was what he said, and now it is all coming true. Stay here, therefore, all of you, till we take the city of Priam." On this the Argives raised a shout, till the ships rang again with the uproar. Nestor, knight of Gerene, then addressed them. "Shame on you," he cried, "to stay talking here like children, when you should fight like men. Where are our covenants now, and where the oaths that we have taken? Shall our counsels be flung into the fire, with our drink-offerings and the right hands of fellowship wherein we have put our trust? We waste our time in words, and for all our talking here shall be no further forward. Stand, therefore, son of Atreus, by your own steadfast purpose; lead the Argives on to battle, and leave this handful of men to rot, who scheme, and scheme in vain, to get back to Argos ere they have learned whether Jove be true or a liar. For the mighty son of Saturn surely promised that we should succeed, when we Argives set sail to bring death and destruction upon the Trojans. He showed us favourable signs by flashing his lightning on our right hands; therefore let none make haste to go till he has first lain with the wife of some Trojan, and avenged the toil and sorrow that he has suffered for the sake of Helen. Nevertheless, if any man is in such haste to be at home again, let him lay his hand to his ship that he may meet his doom in the sight of all. But, O king, consider and give ear to my counsel, for the word that I say may not be neglected lightly. Divide your men, Agamemnon, into their several tribes and clans, that clans and tribes may stand by and help one another. If you do this, and if the Achaeans obey you, you will find out who, both chiefs and peoples, are brave, and who are cowards; for they will vie against the other. Thus you shall also learn whether it is through the counsel of heaven or the cowardice of man that you shall fail to take the town." And Agamemnon answered, "Nestor, you have again outdone the sons of the Achaeans in counsel. Would, by Father Jove, Minerva, and Apollo, that I had among them ten more such councillors, for the city of King Priam would then soon fall beneath our hands, and we should sack it. But the son of Saturn afflicts me with bootless wranglings and strife. Achilles and I are quarrelling about this girl, in which matter I was the first to offend; if we can be of one mind again, the Trojans will not stave off destruction for a day. Now, therefore, get your morning meal, that our hosts join in fight. Whet well your spears; see well to the ordering of your shields; give good feeds to your horses, and look your chariots carefully over, that we may do battle the livelong day; for we shall have no rest, not for a moment, till night falls to part us. The bands that bear your shields shall be wet with the sweat upon your shoulders, your hands shall weary upon your spears, your horses shall steam in front of your chariots, and if I see any man shirking the fight, or trying to keep out of it at the ships, there shall be no help for him, but he shall be a prey to dogs and vultures." Thus he spoke, and the Achaeans roared applause. As when the waves run high before the blast of the south wind and break on some lofty headland, dashing against it and buffeting it without ceasing, as the storms from every quarter drive them, even so did the Achaeans rise and hurry in all directions to their ships. There they lighted their fires at their tents and got dinner, offering sacrifice every man to one or other of the gods, and praying each one of them that he might live to come out of the fight. Agamemnon, king of men, sacrificed a fat five-year-old bull to the mighty son of Saturn, and invited the princes and elders of his host. First he asked Nestor and King Idomeneus, then the two Ajaxes and the son of Tydeus, and sixthly Ulysses, peer of gods in counsel; but Menelaus came of his own accord, for he knew how busy his brother then was. They stood round the bull with the barley-meal in their hands, and Agamemnon prayed, saying, "Jove, most glorious, supreme, that dwellest in heaven, and ridest upon the storm-cloud, grant that the sun may not go down, nor the night fall, till the palace of Priam is laid low, and its gates are consumed with fire. Grant that my sword may pierce the shirt of Hector about his heart, and that full many of his comrades may bite the dust as they fall dying round him." Thus he prayed, but the son of Saturn would not fulfil his prayer. He accepted the sacrifice, yet none the less increased their toil continually. When they had done praying and sprinkling the barley-meal upon the victim, they drew back its head, killed it, and then flayed it. They cut out the thigh-bones, wrapped them round in two layers of fat, and set pieces of raw meat on the top of them. These they burned upon the split logs of firewood, but they spitted the inward meats, and held them in the flames to cook. When the thigh-bones were burned, and they had tasted the inward meats, they cut the rest up small, put the pieces upon spits, roasted them till they were done, and drew them off; then, when they had finished their work and the feast was ready, they ate it, and every man had his full share, so that all were satisfied. As soon as they had had enough to eat and drink, Nestor, knight of Gerene, began to speak. "King Agamemnon," said he, "let us not stay talking here, nor be slack in the work that heaven has put into our hands. Let the heralds summon the people to gather at their several ships; we will then go about among the host, that we may begin fighting at once." Thus did he speak, and Agamemnon heeded his words. He at once sent the criers round to call the people in assembly. So they called them, and the people gathered thereon. The chiefs about the son of Atreus chose their men and marshalled them, while Minerva went among them holding her priceless aegis that knows neither age nor death. From it there waved a hundred tassels of pure gold, all deftly woven, and each one of them worth a hundred oxen. With this she darted furiously everywhere among the hosts of the Achaeans, urging them forward, and putting courage into the heart of each, so that he might fight and do battle without ceasing. Thus war became sweeter in their eyes even than returning home in their ships. As when some great forest fire is raging upon a mountain top and its light is seen afar, even so as they marched the gleam of their armour flashed up into the firmament of heaven. They were like great flocks of geese, or cranes, or swans on the plain about the waters of Cayster, that wing their way hither and thither, glorying in the pride of flight, and crying as they settle till the fen is alive with their screaming. Even thus did their tribes pour from ships and tents on to the plain of the Scamander, and the ground rang as brass under the feet of men and horses. They stood as thick upon the flower-bespangled field as leaves that bloom in summer. As countless swarms of flies buzz around a herdsman's homestead in the time of spring when the pails are drenched with milk, even so did the Achaeans swarm on to the plain to charge the Trojans and destroy them. The chiefs disposed their men this way and that before the fight began, drafting them out as easily as goatherds draft their flocks when they have got mixed while feeding; and among them went King Agamemnon, with a head and face like Jove the lord of thunder, a waist like Mars, and a chest like that of Neptune. As some great bull that lords it over the herds upon the plain, even so did Jove make the son of Atreus stand peerless among the multitude of heroes. And now, O Muses, dwellers in the mansions of Olympus, tell me- for you are goddesses and are in all places so that you see all things, while we know nothing but by report- who were the chiefs and princes of the Danaans? As for the common soldiers, they were so that I could not name every single one of them though I had ten tongues, and though my voice failed not and my heart were of bronze within me, unless you, O Olympian Muses, daughters of aegis-bearing Jove, were to recount them to me. Nevertheless, I will tell the captains of the ships and all the fleet together. Peneleos, Leitus, Arcesilaus, Prothoenor, and Clonius were captains of the Boeotians. These were they that dwelt in Hyria and rocky Aulis, and who held Schoenus, Scolus, and the highlands of Eteonus, with Thespeia, Graia, and the fair city of Mycalessus. They also held Harma, Eilesium, and Erythrae; and they had Eleon, Hyle, and Peteon; Ocalea and the strong fortress of Medeon; Copae, Eutresis, and Thisbe the haunt of doves; Coronea, and the pastures of Haliartus; Plataea and Glisas; the fortress of Thebes the less; holy Onchestus with its famous grove of Neptune; Arne rich in vineyards; Midea, sacred Nisa, and Anthedon upon the sea. From these there came fifty ships, and in each there were a hundred and twenty young men of the Boeotians. Ascalaphus and Ialmenus, sons of Mars, led the people that dwelt in Aspledon and Orchomenus the realm of Minyas. Astyoche a noble maiden bore them in the house of Actor son of Azeus; for she had gone with Mars secretly into an upper chamber, and he had lain with her. With these there came thirty ships. The Phoceans were led by Schedius and Epistrophus, sons of mighty Iphitus the son of Naubolus. These were they that held Cyparissus, rocky Pytho, holy Crisa, Daulis, and Panopeus; they also that dwelt in Anemorea and Hyampolis, and about the waters of the river Cephissus, and Lilaea by the springs of the Cephissus; with their chieftains came forty ships, and they marshalled the forces of the Phoceans, which were stationed next to the Boeotians, on their left. Ajax, the fleet son of Oileus, commanded the Locrians. He was not so great, nor nearly so great, as Ajax the son of Telamon. He was a little man, and his breastplate was made of linen, but in use of the spear he excelled all the Hellenes and the Achaeans. These dwelt in Cynus, Opous, Calliarus, Bessa, Scarphe, fair Augeae, Tarphe, and Thronium about the river Boagrius. With him there came forty ships of the Locrians who dwell beyond Euboea. The fierce Abantes held Euboea with its cities, Chalcis, Eretria, Histiaea rich in vines, Cerinthus upon the sea, and the rock-perched town of Dium; with them were also the men of Carystus and Styra; Elephenor of the race of Mars was in command of these; he was son of Chalcodon, and chief over all the Abantes. With him they came, fleet of foot and wearing their hair long behind, brave warriors, who would ever strive to tear open the corslets of their foes with their long ashen spears. Of these there came fifty ships. And they that held the strong city of Athens, the people of great Erechtheus, who was born of the soil itself, but Jove's daughter, Minerva, fostered him, and established him at Athens in her own rich sanctuary. There, year by year, the Athenian youths worship him with sacrifices of bulls and rams. These were commanded by Menestheus, son of Peteos. No man living could equal him in the marshalling of chariots and foot soldiers. Nestor could alone rival him, for he was older. With him there came fifty ships. Ajax brought twelve ships from Salamis, and stationed them alongside those of the Athenians. The men of Argos, again, and those who held the walls of Tiryns, with Hermione, and Asine upon the gulf; Troezene, Eionae, and the vineyard lands of Epidaurus; the Achaean youths, moreover, who came from Aegina and Mases; these were led by Diomed of the loud battle-cry, and Sthenelus son of famed Capaneus. With them in command was Euryalus, son of king Mecisteus, son of Talaus; but Diomed was chief over them all. With these there came eighty ships. Those who held the strong city of Mycenae, rich Corinth and Cleonae; Orneae, Araethyrea, and Licyon, where Adrastus reigned of old; Hyperesia, high Gonoessa, and Pellene; Aegium and all the coast-land round about Helice; these sent a hundred ships under the command of King Agamemnon, son of Atreus. His force was far both finest and most numerous, and in their midst was the king himself, all glorious in his armour of gleaming bronze- foremost among the heroes, for he was the greatest king, and had most men under him. And those that dwelt in Lacedaemon, lying low among the hills, Pharis, Sparta, with Messe the haunt of doves; Bryseae, Augeae, Amyclae, and Helos upon the sea; Laas, moreover, and Oetylus; these were led by Menelaus of the loud battle-cry, brother to Agamemnon, and of them there were sixty ships, drawn up apart from the others. Among them went Menelaus himself, strong in zeal, urging his men to fight; for he longed to avenge the toil and sorrow that he had suffered for the sake of Helen. The men of Pylos and Arene, and Thryum where is the ford of the river Alpheus; strong Aipy, Cyparisseis, and Amphigenea; Pteleum, Helos, and Dorium, where the Muses met Thamyris, and stilled his minstrelsy for ever. He was returning from Oechalia, where Eurytus lived and reigned, and boasted that he would surpass even the Muses, daughters of aegis-bearing Jove, if they should sing against him; whereon they were angry, and maimed him. They robbed him of his divine power of song, and thenceforth he could strike the lyre no more. These were commanded by Nestor, knight of Gerene, and with him there came ninety ships. And those that held Arcadia, under the high mountain of Cyllene, near the tomb of Aepytus, where the people fight hand to hand; the men of Pheneus also, and Orchomenus rich in flocks; of Rhipae, Stratie, and bleak Enispe; of Tegea and fair Mantinea; of Stymphelus and Parrhasia; of these King Agapenor son of Ancaeus was commander, and they had sixty ships. Many Arcadians, good soldiers, came in each one of them, but Agamemnon found them the ships in which to cross the sea, for they were not a people that occupied their business upon the waters. The men, moreover, of Buprasium and of Elis, so much of it as is enclosed between Hyrmine, Myrsinus upon the sea-shore, the rock Olene and Alesium. These had four leaders, and each of them had ten ships, with many Epeans on board. Their captains were Amphimachus and Thalpius- the one, son of Cteatus, and the other, of Eurytus- both of the race of Actor. The two others were Diores, son of Amarynces, and Polyxenus, son of King Agasthenes, son of Augeas. And those of Dulichium with the sacred Echinean islands, who dwelt beyond the sea off Elis; these were led by Meges, peer of Mars, and the son of valiant Phyleus, dear to Jove, who quarrelled with his father, and went to settle in Dulichium. With him there came forty ships. Ulysses led the brave Cephallenians, who held Ithaca, Neritum with its forests, Crocylea, rugged Aegilips, Samos and Zacynthus, with the mainland also that was over against the islands. These were led by Ulysses, peer of Jove in counsel, and with him there came twelve ships. Thoas, son of Andraemon, commanded the Aetolians, who dwelt in Pleuron, Olenus, Pylene, Chalcis by the sea, and rocky Calydon, for the great king Oeneus had now no sons living, and was himself dead, as was also golden-haired Meleager, who had been set over the Aetolians to be their king. And with Thoas there came forty ships. The famous spearsman Idomeneus led the Cretans, who held Cnossus, and the well-walled city of Gortys; Lyctus also, Miletus and Lycastus that lies upon the chalk; the populous towns of Phaestus and Rhytium, with the other peoples that dwelt in the hundred cities of Crete. All these were led by Idomeneus, and by Meriones, peer of murderous Mars. And with these there came eighty ships. Tlepolemus, son of Hercules, a man both brave and large of stature, brought nine ships of lordly warriors from Rhodes. These dwelt in Rhodes which is divided among the three cities of Lindus, Ielysus, and Cameirus, that lies upon the chalk. These were commanded by Tlepolemus, son of Hercules by Astyochea, whom he had carried off from Ephyra, on the river Selleis, after sacking many cities of valiant warriors. When Tlepolemus grew up, he killed his father's uncle Licymnius, who had been a famous warrior in his time, but was then grown old. On this he built himself a fleet, gathered a great following, and fled beyond the sea, for he was menaced by the other sons and grandsons of Hercules. After a voyage. during which he suffered great hardship, he came to Rhodes, where the people divided into three communities, according to their tribes, and were dearly loved by Jove, the lord, of gods and men; wherefore the son of Saturn showered down great riches upon them. And Nireus brought three ships from Syme- Nireus, who was the handsomest man that came up under Ilius of all the Danaans after the son of Peleus- but he was a man of no substance, and had but a small following. And those that held Nisyrus, Crapathus, and Casus, with Cos, the city of Eurypylus,
My mother wants to see and take care of my children sometimes? She refuses to buy safety locks for her house and wants me to buy them. I have a gate that I brought there and I needed it back, and she threw a tantrum. She wants me to bring toys for the children.I don't have that much space in my car to bring a lot for 4 children. She is very immature and always asks me why I don't bring the children over, it's because I saw my niece chug bleach! I came inside, and asked where my niece was and my mom said in the bathroom, and I saw her drinking. My niece is alive thank god to me, because if I wasn't there she would die. Even if I go there to her house with the children she makes me take care of the 4 kids while she goes upstairs and passes out without telling me. I have an 8 month old who is starting to crawl and there is no space for her. My mom has a big house, it's she jampacks it with crap. What and how should I tell her that I don't want my children to be with her and I'm sorry about it, but I would like to maintain a nice relationship with her? we always fight over this, and she doesn't care. We try to go out to eat, but she always gets upset and throws a tantrum. She hates my husband and is jealous that my inlaws care for my child once a week no I said that even though I do come over with the children she makes me take care of 4 children

Can you name the dog breed? i am interested in adding a new member to our family. i will go to the shelter but i would like to know more about what breed to look for to get the type of dog i want. i have a school age son so the animal must be child-friendly. we have a great gated yard with lots of space to run. but i would prefer a pet that comes in at night to sleep or even to play. i'm looking for something in the medium size. lab is too big, chihuahua is too small. training, attention and time are not a problem. my principle concern is safety. which dog is right for my family?
How do I get my design ideas for a textile product for children from birth upwards? For my GCSE textiles coursework, I have chosen to design an original textiles product suitable for children from birth upwards. Other pupils who've chosen this option are designing things such as height charts & play mats.To all parents, is there anything that you feel you need for your child but the market does not offer it? For example, you can buy things to put in the trolley seat at the supermarket with things for your child to do to prevent them from pulling items off the shelves. My mum says that she'd have wanted one of those when I was younger. So, is there anything you wish you could have for your child? Or are there any particular times when your child is bored? Or are there times when your child injures themselves?e.g My sister used to hit her face on the safety gate at the top of the stairs so we attatched cloth around it. 1 person answered this question earlier, she wished there was somewhere safe to put her child when using a public toilet! Any other problems you face?
landlord tenant case? someone stole a few belongings from my friends apartment in september and the landlord said if she secure the apartment it would be deducted form the rent. My friend was pregnant and didnt feel safe so she got window gates and a new door lock installed. A few weeks later thats when she was told it would not be deducted. we are not even worried about her stolen belongings anymore but for her safety as well as her unborn child. Now the landlord is taking her to landlord tenant court and possible eviction. She feel the landlord has not live up to "warranty of habitability". When she moved in she failed o notice that the kitchen cubburds were filled with insect- the apartment still gets insects and flies. The window to her fire escape wasnt installed correct leaving the window to open from the outside when it is locked on the inside. Then later being informed about this information by the super who in turn has a copy of everyones key......... then on top of that the super said he saw the person enter her apartment but failed to notify police. Which sounds fishy to me who would enter another persons apartment through the fire escape in broad daylight and were there is traffic? But anywway, she has police report- receipt for the work. What other documents do she need to win the case? the only problem is, is that she doesnt have a written document about the work beind deducted form nov rent- all she has is verbal agreement which they are now denying. So she hasnt payed rent becasue she wants to straighten everything out before- becasue it is confusing right now. Can you help assist her in winning this case? If you need more info email me also when she spoke to the police they remembered this apartment for being robbed before she moved in the same way no forced entry. So She is pretty sure the landlords know that apartment has a history of being robbed and they still failed to secure the apartment from further burglary
What do you think is the source of the new wave of intolerance of babies & toddlers normal behavior? I am referring specifically to the latest airline incident in which a stewardess had the pilot turn the plane around & remove a mother & her 19 month old son because (after an 11 hour lay-over) he was talking during her presentation of safety information. This mom found herself & her child being escorted out of the airport by police. Incidentally, her son had fallen asleep from during the time they had been removed from the plane on the way to the gate. He was exhausted & understandably cranky. I have experienced other instances of intolerance against my son in FAMILY restaurants. I had one woman come up to me once & ask me if my son (who was 1 at the time) had been tested to see what was wrong with him. I politely told her "No, I don't need to have him tested. I know what the problem is. The problem is HE'S AN INFANT!!!" continued..... In another incident we were on vacation & went to a diner for breakfast after a night of no sleep because of teens partying next door. My son was tired, hungry & cranky as we all were. He was 2 at the time. A man came up to me while we were sitting there waiting for our food & told me I was rude. I asked him what I had done to him. He said because my "kid" was crying & disturbing his meal. I told him that the only rude person I saw was HIM because he was an adult & KNEW BETTER than to disturb other diners & my son didn't! My philosophy is if you don't want to be disturbed by kids, up your dining budget & go somewhere where there is no kid's menu. Nobody knows the circumstances or reasons why a child may be crying - such as this child who was removed from the plane. He had just experienced an 11 hour layover, something that would be difficult & trying even for an ADULT! WHAT IS UP WITH THE WORLD TODAY THAT BABIES & TODDLERS ARE EXPECTED TO ACT AS ADULTS? The child on the plane was on his mother's lap & was saying "bye bye plane." Many of the other passengers came to the defense of the toddler & are now going to the authorities & the airline with their eyewitness accounts of how the only one "out of control" was the stewardess. I was referring to my own personal incidents about my son when I referred "crying."
Are kids really safer than they used to be? My dad was raised on a farm in the 1940's. There were no bicycle helmets, gates on stairs, or age appropriate toys. One time he and his brothers pounded a shot gun bullet with a hammer, which exploded, forcing the hammer up over his head and hit him in the back of the head (he did not let go). Where was his mother? Working the farm, of course. Now-a-days, kids live in padded cells, practically. Are humans being born with less constitution now? I'm wondering if the ratio of child injuries/death is really decreased with the advent of all these safety precauctions. (By the way, I wouldn't dream of letting my child handle a hammer without the closest supervision. I'd probably act like it was radioactive. Ha.)
Neighbors children in danger...? We live in a small apt. complex and the managers children, ages 4 and 8, drive a 4 wheeler like mad all over the property. My sons and I have almost hit these kids 4 times. They race around corners and when you enter the complex the gate impedes your sight, and this is when you almost run over them. I have also seen another neighbor almost back into the 4 yr. old. The mother actually bungee cords this child to the 4 wheeler, no helmets and they take off, with her and dad inside, no supervision. I called the cops and told them i didn't want to be sued WHEN they are hit, because they will be eventually, and they sent a guy out, and as soon as he left they were back on it. My husband says it is private property and the police can't do anything about it, i say that is crap. What can be done? The parents obviously do not care about the safety of these kids, and I don't want it on my conscience if they are killed! Ideas? Keep in mind, this is serious, and it isn't the fault of the children. It's their arsewipe-shite-for-brains parents, who shouldn't be raising a cat, much less a child..
"Disciplining" my 1 yr old son? Without spanking, hitting, etc.? I do not spank my child and I will not. However, we are trying to teach my son right and wrong. For example, he has started biting me intentionally occassionally and laughing. When I look at him in the eyes and say "No, that hurts mama" he gets so sad and puts his head down. Is this what I should be doing at this point? Is there anything else I should do or just let him be a baby and discipline when he is older? Specifically, we are having problems with him pulling on his safety gate until it falls and scares us to death. Kim, I won't even dignify that with a response.
stolen property- no forced entry--------------landlords negligence? someone stole a few belongings from my friends apartment in september and the landlord said if she secure the apartment it would be deducted form the rent. Which sounds fishy to me who would enter another persons apartment throught the fire escape in broad daylight and were there is traffic? But anywway, she has police report- receipt for the work. What other documents do she need to win the case? the only problem is, is that she doesnt have a written document about the work beind deducted form nov rent- all she has is verbal agreement which they are now denying. So she hasnt payed rent becasue she wants to straighten everything out before- becasue it is confusing right now. Can you help assist her in winning this case? If you need more info email me also when she spoke to the police they remembered this apartment for being robbed before she moved in the same way no froced entry. So She is pretty sure the landlords know that apartment has a history of being robbed and they still failed to secure the apartment from further burglary
I love kids but how damn annoying is it to be behind a schol bus for 8 miles on one lane that stops every min? They wonder why American children are so obese!I do understand partly it is for safety,we walked to school but much safer than, but this is crazy I swear every 6 feet for High School kids! There are 6 stops inside my complex which is a gated community! I put SCHOOL!and I am not saying they should walk to school but maybe make bus stops a little farther apart for bigger kids! Aha Dato! Normally that is true, but I was a paramedic for 8 years, but it is illegal to pass a bus on a one lane road!I do agree with you though!
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes? from garage sales and second hand stores. It's our first baby, and I know she's just trying to help us since we don't have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i'll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them. I'd like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she'd rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else's baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?! I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn't listen. She just went out and bought "clothes that looked unused" :( Help? I'm not spoiled, thank you, I just don't like it when people are cheap with family members. I'd never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that's like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!
