What is your experience with personal safety in Gdansk?

We've heard various accounts of how safe it is for western travellors to Poland. Are some parts of the city safer than others? Are you comfortable walking around at night? Thank you for all your insight. I look forward to visiting. We will be there in June, 2007

  1. I wouldn't walk around at night by myself anyways, but the safest parts are the ones with the most people around, like center of the city, where the attractions are. Try to stay away from parts of the town that just simply look "bad". I didn't have any bad experiences walking around, but I was never alone at night. You shouldnt be worried, just have fun!
  2. Contrary to the last answer, being in the city at night isn't exactly the safest place to be. Being in the bigger cities at night you can be subject to a lot of personal robbery. If you stay where there are many people, it will be very easy to be pick-pocketed. The best places in fact are just outside the city centre (or Rynek) as many families live there and would be willing to help if need be. Not too many families live in the Rynek as this is a commercial area. In a big city as Gdansk, not too many people would offer to help you if you were being attacked in the Rynek. Best advice, stay away from dark places, docks and very high traffic areas.
  3. when we were there in July it was fine - just like with any big city - don't put yourself in harms way. don't walk around alone at night anywhere. we (2 of us) walked early early in the morning along the baltic and it was wonderful. one of the guys went out with some people he'd just met and had a great time - heck of a hang over in the morning but -- no one robed him or anything. just be sensible - like in any town in the US -- don't let your freight get the best of you and have a blast! if you can get into the Kaszupy Mountian area i recommend it highly! also the longest pier in Sopot - wonderful shopping - there you could walk around. also the old town type area of Gdansk wow such shopping AND they have these buildings they are rebuilding -- ooh it was fascinating to watch! just as with every shopping area - watch for pick pockets!
  4. I've lived there for a year, never having any troubles lots of police on the streets, especially in touristic season
