Is the school allowed to put security cameras in the bathroom?

We had a school meeting today and the principal stated that over the summer we have had security cameras installed all around the school do to some past incidents from other local school districts. He said that "Some are visible and some are hidden, but the school security of NY state is now always going to be watching from these cameras every day." I was just wondering if they were allowed to install cameras in the bathrooms? Is that even legal?

12. In my opinion, but i dont know for certain, i think they can aslong as it is not pointed directly in to a stall. such as pointed at the mirrors ect.

14. no, not in the bathroom, so confine your illegal activities to there and don;t look guilty when you come out - the cameras might be focused right on the door area!
15. Cameras are not allowed to be put in any public bathroom. However they can be put right out side the door.
16. Unless its in the privacy of a persons own home, and everyone who will be using the bathroom agrees. Its illegal to put a camera in a bathroom, public or private under any circumstances. I doubt there's much the kids themselves can do besides finding the cameras and destroying them, try to get some parents involved.. sue the school for sexual harassment, child porn and unauthorized pornography creation.
17. No. it is illegal and they can get in an incredible amount of trouble for doing that. Especially because it's a school! If they have them facing into the stalls then they're done for.
18. That is illegal because the bathroom is a private place; that is SEXUAL HARASSMENT!
19. It isn't even legal to put cameras in the bathrooms of prisons. Or in the inmates rooms for that matter, so I think that it is highly unlikely that it would be legal to put them in the bathrooms of schools. Also consider the fact that you are minors. If the camera caught anything sexual then that would be considered child porn.
20. No, they are not allowed to put cameras that would capture activity inside the toilet stalls. They are most definitely allowed to put cameras inside of the bathroom, though. That is not a private area.
