Is it illegal to have security cameras that monitor a restaurant in your home?

I have been working at a breakfast restaurant for the past month, and I have recently discovered that the owner of the restaurant has security cameras in her own home that monitor the restaurant. I have heard this is illegal but I am unsure, can anybody confirm if it is illegal or not? Thank you.

  1. The cameras would have to be in the restaurant. It is impossible for the camera in the house to take pictures at another location. Did you mean to say the monitor? The monitor can be in the owner's home, to review off-site.
  2. It's her restaurant, she can monitor it any way she chooses. Absolutely legal in every way (except for cameras in areas such as change rooms or toilets)
  3. It's most likely legal. The only thing that a law may take issue with is that it's being monitored from a private residence and being that it's her own restaurant, she's probably within her rights. If the cameras were being monitored from the managers office, there would be no question whatsoever. The only areas where it would be illegal to have a camera would the the restrooms and a locker if you have one. Those are the only places where you have an expectation and right to privacy when at work.
  4. Yes,legal. As long as she is the owner of the business,it is up to her, within the rules of decency,on how she monitors the running of her business. As an aside,a friend of mine has 4 pubs, and watches all 4 from his home.+ all the transactions are monitored from home as well.
  5. It is legal, and very common. She can monitor her restaurant from any where she chooses.
