2. Great question! The best way to encourage a child to be safe is to practice safety ourselves. If youngsters are encouraged and taught properly, they will follow and imitate parents, older siblings, and those in authority. The actions of celebrities and public figures are often in conflict with what we want a child to know and how to behave. Thus, they are not always the best role models in this regard. That is why the rules and guidelines should be continually discussed and reinforced Care must be taken not to confuse a youth by saying one thing, then doing something different - like wear your seat belt, but then not wearing one myself.
