How to obtain social security benefits as a minor?
My father is eligible for social security (lives out of state) and I am a minor. Thus, I am entitled to benefits but I do not know how to file an application. I checked online, and they do not have an application for children available. Do you have a link to the application, or do I obtain a paper copy at the SS office? Thanks. PS I am not a disabled child-I am looking to collect benefits on my father's behalf So after he files, what do I have to do? Why did the SS office send me a letter telling ME to file an application?

- I think that you can do this only if your father passes away. Just having a parent that is eligible for social security doesn't make you eligible.
- Social Security benefits is a federal program, you father being out of state has no bearing on such, and neither is your entitlement of receving SSB. Based on the info you've provided, you can't claim SSB on behalf on your father, he has to do it himself.
- Your father would need to apply.
- If you received a letter you should go to the ss office.
- If your father listed you on his application as his minor child, SS is obligated to get an application for benefits from you. You should call SS and make an appointment to file.
