Other than sensor lights, security cameras, etc... are there any everyday tips to protect your home?

My friend just got his house broken into. He is not living there at the moment, rather, moving in. He is of course thinking into going all high tech and installing cameras, motion lights, etc. Is it a good idea to leave the radio/tv on when one leaves the house? Are there any easy tips one can follow when leaving their home?
